But if the D3x is a studio or landscape camera, you only need one. And if you already have lenses that work full frame (didn't fall into the DX lens trap), then you have a "medium format" camera without buying a complete new system.
As for needing all that resolution, it's not what you need but what your client wants. There are clients that open the file and check what camera shot the photo, and if they see you've upsampled, will reject you. Of course, there are also clients who think anything at 300 dpi (don't say ppi to them) is "high res." ('Here's your 300dpi picture, too bad it's 2"x3"')
I would hope that side by side, 24MP would show some quality difference over 12MP. Also, isn't it a few more bits?
I think Nikon priced it at what they thought the market would bear (and similar to the Canon when introduced), and maybe high enough not to cannibalize their D3 sales, but I think they should have brought it in at $6-6.5K.

Three things I've always been taught. 1) you can never be too thin; 2) you can never be too rich; and 3) you can never have too much resolution or MP's.
My new work flow with the change to the D300 is shooting completely NEF and converting to high rez jpg for archiving. I keep all my "A" work as NEF files but the "extras" and "OK Keepers" all go to jpg to free up space. (Currently using 648 Gig on a 1 TB Raid) I get all the resolution I need and recapture about 11 meg per file on the Raid.
My dad said, "Son, just look a the picture. If it is a good picture then nobody knows you used your Yashica instead of their Nikon." He saved $200.00 on my birthday and I learned a valuable lesson. "Just look at the picture." Nobody sees the name of the camea body and lens unless they pull down the pictures pants and look at the exif underneath.

Speaking of comparisons, two thumbs up for the PPH review and comparison of the D3X and 5D markII. I know a few of the pros here in Calgary who picked up a D3X are super happy with the camera. I might have to convince one of them to let me borrow the camera so I can see how well it handles sports work.
On a rather amusing side note Ken Rockwell thinks that "we" (being him) is effectively boycotting the D3X so that Nikon will be forced to drop the price. Canon has been charging that much since the 1Ds and there are those very willing to pay for a D3X, so yeah, good luck with that boycott Ken.

24MP...WOW this is going to be a awesome camera. The price is steep but I believe that it will is well worth it. My big question is can I use lenses form say a D80 or one of the other Digital SLRs or will I need ot buy new lenses as well. If that is the case this tool will be well out a realistic price range.
