Re: Wet Cleaning D3 Sensor

Well, I might have made a mistake, but I just yesterday cleaned my D700 sensor with "Crystal Clear", an earlier sensor cleaner by Photographic Solutions. I scanned the info on their website, and should be using the E2 fluid wit Sensor Swabs, but the sensor cleaned up after 3 tries. After this thread, I think I'll discard the old stuff and buy new!

I think your biggest issues would be with repeated uses, but I would definitely dump the old stuff.

Re: Wet Cleaning D3 Sensor

Had a look at the E2 system, and had a shock at the prices of the swabs - £35 approx for 12 - do you find that one swab does the job, or do you find yourself having use several to get a good clean sensor? Anyone reused swabs for several swipes during the same cleaning session, rather than discarding after one wipe as recommended?

Thanks in advance guys

Jerry

That's why I went the PecPads/spatula route. I cut the PecPads in fourths, which extends their usefulness, and better fits the spatula. I have not used the swabs more than once for fear of entrapped grit scratching the filter. I remember once swiping a swab twice, then suffering torments wondering if I'd scratched it. Then I figured the PecPads were cheap enough that it wasn't worth it for the angst.

The pre-made swabs are convenient but pricey. With just a little effort, one can make the PecPads/spatula swabs at much less cost, and with just as much effectiveness.

Re: Wet Cleaning D3 Sensor

I have a couple of D3's and I would NOT use anything from Photographic Solutions on my sensor, including the recommended E2 solution. The only thing that touches my sensors are from Visible Dust and I start out by using the Green V Swabs with Smear away to solve any of the lubricant problems you are talking about, which is true, and then follow up again with the Green V swab and the VDust Plus solution which will clean any residue off that the Smear away leaves behind. I have talked to many people at length regarding this from Visible Dust and they are extremely knowledgeable and I encourage anyone with any questions to pick up the phone and give a call and have them explain why not to bother with your E2 solution. I work as a digital tech for many top photographers in the industry and everyone is going to do their own thing, but the people who know and care will do the right thing! Hope this helps. Oh, and definitely buy the 7x Sensor Loupe from Visible Dust to see exactly what is going on with your cleaning process.

Re: Wet Cleaning D3 Sensor

While I have a great respect and trust with Visible Dust and own several of their products, I did not find any of their solution locally and had to opt for the E2 and Sensor Swabs. The lubricant smear took several attempts, six to be exact, but after using half a box of swabs my sensor is clean as verified by the Sensor Loupe.

I agree with Dennis that reusing the swab is a BIG NO NO. As I like to say, "just DON'T do it!"

Wipe once and throw it out. There's no sense damaging a 5000 camera sensor by reusing an 8 dollar swab. Penny wise and pound foolish.

HTH!
