What would you change? |
First, I'd round out the front grip a little; there's a bit of an edge there that makes the camera fit my hand like a glove...with sand down at the end of the fingers - it's comfortable all the way up to that point. A somewhat minor thing, but that edge on the grip is the first thing I notice when I pick up the D3 versus the Canon.
The second thing I'd do is put a wheel on the back of the D3. Reviewing images and making menu selections on the Canon is a better experience because rotating the Canon's big thumb wheel is a lot more comfortable and effortless than pushing that multi-function joystick thing a couple hundred times.
Third, I'd eliminate the following:
- metering mode switch
- C/S/M focus mode switch
- focus point selection switch
- drive mode wheel
...and I'd make these functions available in some other way, even if it meant adding dedicated buttons (upon pushing the button you'd then select the desired function using the top or rear LCD windows).
...but that's about it. The D3 is a spectacular camera, no doubt. I only gripe about ergonomics because there isn't much I'd change about the Canon in a physical/form-factor sense. I would certainly redesign the Canon eyecup, as that plasticky thing seems neither particularly comfortable nor robust; I've broken two of them. But otherwise, Canon has (and has always had) the edge in ergonomics, going back to the original EOS 650.
