Re: Nikon - You're up next...

I'd like to see some lenses soon too... then I'd rather not see a new Nikon body in a hurry.
Unless it's a freakshow high rez latest tech butt kicker.

Bill.

I second Bill's thoughts, but a Freakshow, High-Rez, Latest Tech, Butt-Kicker would always be welcome ;-)

What would you change?
First, I'd round out the front grip a little; there's a bit of an edge there that makes the camera fit my hand like a glove...with sand down at the end of the fingers - it's comfortable all the way up to that point. A somewhat minor thing, but that edge on the grip is the first thing I notice when I pick up the D3 versus the Canon.

The second thing I'd do is put a wheel on the back of the D3. Reviewing images and making menu selections on the Canon is a better experience because rotating the Canon's big thumb wheel is a lot more comfortable and effortless than pushing that multi-function joystick thing a couple hundred times.

Third, I'd eliminate the following:
- metering mode switch
- C/S/M focus mode switch
- focus point selection switch
- drive mode wheel
...and I'd make these functions available in some other way, even if it meant adding dedicated buttons (upon pushing the button you'd then select the desired function using the top or rear LCD windows).

...but that's about it. The D3 is a spectacular camera, no doubt. I only gripe about ergonomics because there isn't much I'd change about the Canon in a physical/form-factor sense. I would certainly redesign the Canon eyecup, as that plasticky thing seems neither particularly comfortable nor robust; I've broken two of them. But otherwise, Canon has (and has always had) the edge in ergonomics, going back to the original EOS 650.

It has? I had no idea.
I can't find anything online, outside of rumor threads on forums.
Nikon certainly isn't making mention of it on their website.
Do you have a link?

Any idea when a guy might actually be able to BUY one?

Again, was this announced anywhere one could actually read about it?

Someone post a link. The lack of this critical piece of equipment is keeping a brother down!

It is interesting how everyone's hand is different. I find the Canon layout completely unusable. The Nikon D3 fits perfectly and I like all the controls. The entire camera is better than I asked for on my wish list.

Nikon had the new 70-200 announcement on their site but may have removed it because lots of companies are now delaying new products due to the economy.
