Re: Nikon - You're up next...

I agree too, there are times with my D3 I almost feel like I am cheating or doing something I shouldn't shooting at 3200 or 6400 all day long and still getting very usable images. It has opened a lot of doors being able to shoot as stopped down as my lens allows for macro, etc. and is pretty amazing! I know the new Canon 5d Mark II and the newer Canon sensors technology are capable of making the electronics on the sensor smaller so they can have more room allowing for larger pixels/buckets to help reduce noise and gain overall image quality. That is supposedly where the technology is heading and it is about an overall improvement in everything surrounding the sensor as opposed to just bigger MP's, etc. That was what I heard through the Canon grapevine at least.
I have a Canon Mark III 1Ds and a LOT of Canon quality glass and just bought my D3 and about 4 lenses so far and am really waiting to see what Nikon is doing next and to get a new Canon in my hands to see how it handles noise and holds up to my D3. I really enjoy shooting with both and in an ideal world would have both Nikon and Canon pro bodies with all fast glass from each! Ok, maybe not realistic, but still fun thinking about.

Re: Nikon - You're up next...

The D700 was a relative easy and made economic sense for Nikon.
I think that was the next thing up on Nikon's plate.

I expect more new FX full frame lenses before we see a new full frame camera.

I could be wrong as Nikon exceeded everything on my wish list and a few more with the D3. What the Nikon sensor lab is up to has always been a deep dark secret.

Re: Nikon - You're up next...

I have to say I'm pretty content at the moment; I'm actually NOT looking forward to news of any new pro Nikon bodies for at least a year or two.

One thing I need Nikon to get going on is bringing a new 70-200/2.8 to market. The absence of an FX-optimized version of this lens in the Nikon lineup is forcing me to keep my Canon gear longer than would otherwise be necessary. I originally intended to keep my 1D Mark III and long glass (Canon 70-200/2.8; Canon 400/2.8L) for action and event photography, and use the D3 strictly for weddings and other kinds of shooting in less harsh environments. But I'm happy enough with the D3 that I'm contemplating selling off my Canon stuff.

I don't need more megapixels. I'm very satisfied with both of my cameras at high ISO settings; I shot a lot of available light stuff at ISO 3200 at a wedding on Saturday and I'm quite happy with the results. And I don't need more speed; the frame rates are just fine.

Nikon could certainly improve their ergonomics, and again, they need to get that 70-200 fixed. But otherwise, they're doing pretty well by me!

Re: Nikon - You're up next...

I think the difference is at least with me is I am around a ton of commercial shooters that I know would benefit and enjoy more resolution out of their cameras just like I would. I personally only bought the D3 for its low light ability and could not sell my Mark III 1Ds because I NEED to have the bigger files for printing larger prints and for clients that demand it. Although I print larger prints up to 90" on occasion and more often somewhere between 30" and 60" more regularly, I definitely like having more file than less to work with. I really do not like knowing I have a point and shoot like the new Canon G10 with more resolution than my D3 and also that my D3 has less resolution than my older Mark II 1Ds for example. Nikon NEEDS in my opinion to step up and come out with a camera QUICK that matches the Mark III1Ds's and new 5D Mark II's MP count. And the new 5D for $2700 with HD video...come on already Nikon and do something when it makes sense to do something! Hey, these are my thoughts and I do know others that are on the same page as me with both Nikon and Canon's and really do enjoy both, but Nikon could really do some damage in my opinion if they had a D3 equivalent with a bigger sensor that handled noise in the same manner as the current D3 with an improvement in image quality. Is that too much to ask? I love my D3 and would probably sell off my Canon Mark III 1Ds and only keep my best glass like the 1.2 stuff, MPE 65mm macro, etc. and keep a new 5D Mark II body and be a Nikon guy with the Canon basics on the side. Man, that sounds confusing!

Re: Nikon - You're up next...

As much as I would like a 21mp camera, I really would rather Nikon have their attention on high ISO performance, which is where they put it. I feel that the D3 and D700 are the the current best in the DSLR market right now.

If high resolution was really important to me, I would buy a Hasselblad or Phase One kit. By my calculations you'd have to up your fees by about $200 per shoot assuming you shoot 6 jobs in a month. I don't think that it would be too hard a sell to most clients.

Re: Nikon - You're up next...

But how much better do you want high ISO performance? Really, this is far better than anyone has seen yet and it is pretty damn good. People like Sandro who shoot the Nikon D3 add shot those shots at 6400 ASA and then printed them at 30" with really no noise and up to probably around 40" or a bit more for the larger prints and it basically looks like nice 35mm grain noise and totally acceptable. I personally know the printer who printed these files for Nikon and is out of Chicago too and saw how nice they actually printed up first hand on an Epson 7800 and was completely blown away. Really, everyone was...Sandro, printer, clients. I did not even have to see more because it was really pretty amazing. I'm excited about higher ISO performance as much as anyone, but Nikon is pretty damn good right now in regards to handling noise at higher ISOs well and could benefit from having something comparable to the Mark III 1Ds. The D3 is really the match up for the Canon Mark III 1D and the D3x/D4 with a 20 something MP count would be something to fill that gap of the 1Ds Canon. Right now I feel there is a gap that Nikon really needs to fill. My opinion personally.

The new 70-200 has been announced.
Here is a list of what is supposed to be coming:
70-200 f2.8 VRII Nano Crystal,
85 f1.4 AIS Nano Crystal,
50 f1.4 AIS Nano Crystal,

I would like to see at least an 80-400 AFS-VRII
A none telescoping 70-400 f/2.8 AFS-VRII would be better yet.

I would personally be surprised if Nikon could improve their ergonomics. The D3 seems to fit my hand perfectly. And, the balance is just right with a 70-200 lens
What would you change?
