I'm taking a trip later this month with my wife on the QMII, cruising from New York to Nova Scotia, Canada, Newport, Rode Island, Boston and back to New York. I am considering which lens or lenses to take on the trip. I can take either camera, but I want to travel light, but be flexible enough to shoot many different subjects. This is a fall foliage cruise, so I want to get plenty of color, as well as covering all the other excursions.
I'm not opposed to buying a lens to carry, and I'm open to all suggestions!
Thanks, Mark S.

Personally, if you have the D700, that's what I'd take. If you go too light, you really impede what you can do, so I wouldn't leave with only one lens. If it were me, I'd take my 17-35mm and 70-200mm, plus a flash unit. There isn't too much you can't handle with that.
Mike, Yes, I have both cameras, as well as a 14-24, 24-70(both fairly new), an 80-200, and a 17-35. I agree, David, that I could cover most things with a 17-35 and an 80-200, but I'm really not sure I want to lug that big lens around. The 24-70 might be the best choice for an all-round lens, and maybe one, longer, fixed focal length lens. I'm thinking maybe a 105 or 135? This is the first time I've missed my old 180 2.8
I guess I could just bite the bullet and carry the 14-24, 24-70, ect., or I could just go old school and carry an M6 and a 35mm Summicron
Thanks, Mark S.

David, you have a point, and I'm weighing(literally) whether or not I want to lug the whole bag through airports, and piers, along with my luggage. I have been thinking about getting a Think Tank Airport Roller, just for these times, so that's a consideration.
I've also thought about taking the D300, and buying the new 16-85? lens. It's reported to be very sharp, and would probably be one all-round lens.

I think David hit the nail on the head, when he said lenses don't do you much good in a drawer at home, or your stateroom on the ship. Take the D700, 17-35, 24-70 and 70-200. With the camera around your neck, the other two lenses will go nicely in a day pack or belt pouch. With the D700 you won't even need to lug a big flash. Easy!

Take the Hasselblad XPan and a brick of Fujichrome Velvia and be done with it! ;-) Have a good trip and make great pictures!
