Re: Capture 2

Nikon Capture NX 2?

Still has some problems in the UI area but much better than Capture NX. All palettes are now prt of the Edit List panel, thus getting rid of all the kilometres one covered with NX.

The Auto Retouch Brush works at least as well as the Photoshop pendant making the need for PS or a similar last step image processor ever more superfluous.

Haven't had a crash, yet, but NX 2 still tends to slow down over time and image number processed. Not as bad as with its predecessor.

Best of all: NX 2 is much faster - for individual images.
Worst of all: NX2 is still a slow snail - for batching.

Have been working with it for the past 62 days on a daily basis.

Re: Capture 2

Capture NX 2.0 is, in my opinion, the best processor for Nikon NEF images with one rather large exception. If you are looking to work on a handful of images from a shoot to produce the final images for a client, I believe this is the best software for a NEF image.

Now the exception, since the program is still based on an antiquated batch processing module, it is painstakingly slow to make individual adjustments to several hundred images as compared to synching adjustments in Camera Raw. To offset this issue, I group my images into folders that will then be batched together.

It's still the best processing tool to extract the ultimate amount of detail and color fidelity from a NEF. I've been using it since it came out and have not had any stability issues.

Hope that helps!

Re: Capture 2

Thanks for the reply's, speed is always good. These small tweeks seem a lot more like an update verses the next version of the software.

Re: Capture 2

Don't forget that software versions [compared to updates] are a marketing ploy - give the thing a new major number and you can charge for it. In my view Capture NX 2 deserves to be seen as a new major version.

Re: Capture 2

Well said Dierk, I agree, NX 2.0 is a major upgrade from 1.x. Nikon is now offering a free upgrade to 2.0 for 1.x users and a substantial discount to upgrade to 2.0 from the trial version.

Here's the product link:

Nikon | Imaging Products | Capture NX 2

Here's a press release snipet regarding the upgrade discount:

Press Release

Retail customers who purchase Capture NX Version 1 from a Nikon Inc. authorized reseller, (Nikon product number 25338) from May 1, 2008 through December 31, 2008 will be entitled to receive a FREE Capture NX 2 Upgrade directly from Nikon. Customers simply need to call Nikon at 800-Nikon-UX with their product key and provide a copy of their proof of purchase to receive a Capture NX 2 key code free of charge.

Customers who received a copy of Capture NX with their D3 or D300 are not eligible for the no-charge upgrade but still qualify for the discounted upgrade edition at an MSRP of $109.95.

Re: Capture 2

Having tried the demo version I see that it is indeed faster however, I have to disagree that it is a major release. Things have been moved around and the clone tool is a new addition but other than that I do not see a lot of new things. . . . or am I missing something?

I do like the software and I agree that it does a great job at processing. If I do not have to go out to PS for anything I am a happy guy. I also like the new setup but if I could customize it I would like it even more.
