I just picked up my D700 at Odessa Camera Center, and it looks sweet! My dealer says I got the first one in West Texas, and I'm sure I did. Will post photos later..

Welcome to the bleeding edge of camera technology. Have fun!

Well, I did find one minor inconvenience last night- Lightroom won't open the D700 files. I'm going to load Nikon Capture this afternoon and see how NC works.
After playing with this camera for awhile, I can say that if your using a D300, you'll have no problems setting up the D700. I do like the virtual horizon, but I'll have to see how it workd in the real world.
I can say that the noise seems exactly the same as the D3, with 3200 being very good, and 6400 useable.

That is great news regarding your impression of the high ISO images! Thanks for posting your findings. In my limited experience with my D3 (10,000 frames) I have found I do far less processing of NEF files, simply because I find a well exposed image needs far less help coming from the camera.
When I do process an image I use Capture NX. I know, I know it's a dog of an application, but time and time again I find it extracts every possible bit of detail and color fidelity, more so than any other processor and yes I have Aperture, Photoshop, Lightroom, Capture One and DXO.
My intention with this post is not to start a "this Raw Processor is better than that Raw Processor conversation," but to encourage you to try Capture NX 2.0 for your D700 raw files. I think you may find the Color Control, U-Point technology useful and make some outstanding image files along the way. It's not the application to individually tweak then process 2000 image files one at a time. However, to work a file for offset print production or ultra huge enlargements I find Capture NX 2.0 does an outstanding job. After all it was made specifically for your camera.
Have fun with the camera and post some pictures when you can.
