Thanks Doug. I saw that same unit advertised on the Strobist, couldn't find a place that shipped to Canada. That's helpful.

Re: SB-800 eating rechargables

My thanks to those who have replied! I will definitely go through my batteries to see if some of them have gone bad. Some are older than others and may not be working correctly.

I really don't think that the charger or charge time is a problem because the charger I use has an indicator light that goes out when the batteries are charged... Also, I did not have many quick drain issues with my now dead SB-600... Perhaps the less powerful SB-600 was gentler on any bad batteries.

I may still pick up that charger Doug suggested, looks pretty awesome.

I've tried them all and this blows everything away. It will show you bad cells and you'll know exactly how much charge is in each cell. Just buy it and if you are unhappy, I'll buy it from you - it's that good. Honest. BTW, it works with any batteries that are rechargeable. The ones with the set are not the best in the world, but they're OK.
+1! I've been using this charger for ~2 years. I completely agree with Doug's assessment. You can set the charge (200-1000 mA) & discharge (100-500 mA) rates independently for each of the 4 slots. Also, it's quite compact, and comes with a nice travel bag & C/D cell adapters. For rechargeable batteries: I highly recommend Sanyo Eneloop low-discharge NiMH AA batteries (I haven't kept up with competitors' performance, there may be a superior low-discharge battery out now).

Kiran

Re: SB-800 eating rechargables

I have been meaning to get one of those chargers, thanks for the link Doug.
I use those type of batteries in my 800's as well. They last a long time.
I would also tell you to do the suggestions above.
Jim

Re: SB-800 eating rechargables

Has anyone tried the MAHA MH-C801D 8 cell Professional Battery Charger from Thomas-distrubting.com? Go check out this site. They sell both of these chargers. I have the MAHA-MH801D and the LaCross charger and like them both. Also try the AA Powerex 2700 batteries 8 for $25.47. These batteries and MAHA MH-C801D Charger are recommended by PC Photo,Outdoor Photographer,Steves Didicams, and Imaging Resource.

Re: SB-800 eating rechargables

Hi.

I have used this charger for more than 3 years in my studio. It handle 12 AA/AAA cells :-0 ANSMANN AG: Energy 16

And when I'm on a travel I use two of thise chargers ANSMANN AG: Digispeed 4 . But be careful with this charger. Only batteries made for fast charging do work.
