Help choosing a lens for D 300

i have read so many reviews, but I thought some of you have "working"
experience.. I am in dilemma between 85 mm 1.8 and 60 mm 2.8 lens for my new D 300. Mostly I am doing wedding and portraits in my studio. i never used nikon lenses before and that is why I need your advice,
thanks, Rad

I have used both lenses and you might find the 85 a bit long for portraits on the D300, depending on the space available. I found the 60 mm did a good job as a portrait lens. I think the 85 is a better portrait lens, but a bit long for the D300.

Have you tried a plain old $100 Nikon standard lens: 50mm f1.8? Equiv to a 75mm on APS sensors. If you had been considering a 60mm f2.8 (someone please correct me if I'm wrong here) would that be more of a flat field lens, meaning the roundness of the face would be sacrificed in the interest of uniform focus across a plane at a given distance.

IOW, are you referring to the 60mm Nikon micro lens? - Ed

Are you doing all available light shooting? If not, I might suggest the 24 - 120 VR lens. It is slower than what you say you are interested in, but that won't matter if you use in studio lighting. The 24 - 120 lens has been said to be not as sharp as some Nikon lenses, but softness is often desired in portraiture.

I find that a zoom lens is very easy to use when framing people. The 24 - 120 range is ideal for almost all portraiture. The 24 - 120 goes for a very good price right now.

Yes Ed, I will buy 50 mm lens for sure, and I will maybe try 60 mm micro. The camera comes with 18-200 and I am not excited with that lens, but we will see what performance in low light situation we are going to get.
Thank you all, Rad
