Nikon Capture - XP 64 Bit

Hi,

I posted this question in the software forum some weeks ago with no replies. Hope someone here will help.

I recently purchased a new PC with XP 64 Bit operating system as I am using 8GB of RAM. I have now discovered that Nikon Capture will not work with 64 Bit XP.
How can I now shoot tethered or control my D2h and D70s from a PC now?
Thanks,

Anthony

Re: Nikon Capture - XP 64 Bit

I can't answer your question about why Nikon Capture doesn't work, but if it needs a driver Nikon would need to supply a special 64 bit version to work under XP x64.

As an XP x64 user myself, what I do for the occasional app I cannot live without is to run it in a 32 bit virtual machine. I have used VMWare to create a virtual machine, then have installed an XP 32 bit version. It will run things that cannot be run in the native 64 bit system because of lack of drivers, and has good access to USB ports, etc. With 8 GB (same as I have) you won't feel much of an impact to running a VM.

It's also a good way to try things and test things that one might not want to have foul up one's main workstation. I test software under development that way, for example.

Once set up, you can make connections from the virtual machine to the host machine's disk, and so you can save files directly.

It's not the most integrated solution, but it could possibly provide a way for you to get functionality not otherwise available.

Noel, the 8GB is your RAM ?
in the VM's 32 bit mode, it's still detected as 8GB ?
As the "plain" 32bit winXP only allow a max RAM of 3.25 GB

I have 8 GB of main system RAM. I recently upgraded, and it's WELL worth doing for anyone who edits big images for a long time in Photoshop.

You set how much RAM to give a virtual machine when you create it in VMWare (it can be adjusted after). I typically give them 1 GB.

It will work you have to run the install and the .exe in windows xp compatability mode. I'm running capture nx and version 4 on an x64 box with 4gb of ram. It both run pretty good too. If you have a question or 2 about what I am talking about shoot me an email.

Re: Nikon Capture - XP 64 Bit

Andrew, I use Capture Control Pro to tether our D2X and D200 cameras to our laptops.

The new D3 and D300 cameras require a upgraded version of Capture Control Pro to work with these cameras.
