Re: D2xs files compare to D300

I think the question was how the D2xs files compare to the D300, not the D200. I'm a little curious myself, as I'm not that thrilled with the image performance of the D200 compared to the D2x. This spring, I'll be in the market for either a D3, a D300, or another D2x. I have to admit that for what I do, the D2x is fine. I hardly ever shoot above ISO 400, I don't do a lot of sports, and I don't mind the 1.5x crop. If I can get a D2x for +/- $1,500, then that makes a lot more sense to me than getting a D3 (which I'd love, but I do have to pay my mortgage at the same time).

Hey Roger -

I would love to see what your indoor arena shots look like. Is it possible to do so w/o registering or creating an account to see the images on your website?

Many thanks,

Sorry but all it takes is a name and legit email address to see the images.

I do not get paid for hits on my site and like to reserve as much bandwidth as possible for those who are invited. I can also tell who looked at what.

You can add some pictures to "your favorites" to better compare them.

The 092907 Fox n Horn Horse Show pictures inside the Quail Creek Barn were all shot with D2X bodies. Kathy (k) used a 70-200 f/2.8 and I (r)used an 80-400 f/5.6 lense. The ISO was set for 800

The 120107k#### files are with the D300 and 70-200 f/2.8 lense.
The 120107r#### files are with the D3 and 80-400 f/5.6.
Many of these are at ISO 1600

The inside shots on 012607 were all shot with the D3 cameras with Auto ISO set at max 6400 and minimum speed 250. These are the best due to having the more capable cameras much more dialed in.

If you need to see a cropped 800x800 section of a particular original JPEG, I can post it here or a link to it as all these examples have the same post processed done by the UpLoader.

Re: D2xs files compare to D300

David
As I hope was conveyed in my prior post, from my experience, the D300 is much superior to any other Nikon body except the D3, and if you want the DX advantages, it's the best choice overall. Although I take good care of my equipment, I haven't had a Nikon body failure on either the Fx/Fxx, or the Dx/Dxx one's I've owned, including some fairly awful conditions shooting sports events in foul weather. They get banged around, and while none have been subjected to a serious impact of over 3 feet on concrete, etc., some have hit the ground from monopod/tripod including some paved surfaces, without any consequential damage. Unless you're rather careless with your equipment, or it's subject to unusual physical risks, if you want to stay with the DX format, I'd seriously consider the D300 instead of the D2x(s) option. With it's much improved battery grip, it's very close in ruggedness capabilities, Good luck on your upgrade!
