| Re: D300 arrived I got my D300 the day before Thanksgiving, and I'm loving the image quality, especially at higher ISOs. Not only is the noise less (about 1-1 1/2 stops better); it is "better looking" noise. By that, I mean that the noise looks like a fine grain, without the colored chunks every other Nikon I've had has. Especially noticable improvement in the blacks. The colors at higher ISOs are much better as well. Worth the upgrade for my photography.
I have shot a wedding and an event with the D300, but haven't really pushed the auto focus too hard and am still setting it up; but so far it seems to either "nail it", or blow it completely. My D2x is still way better for my style of shooting. Drew's test has given me some new ideas on what to try to get the best out of the focussing, so we'll see.
I also just received the vertical grip (MB-D10), and in general like it's new features, especially the new "joy stick" focus spot selector for shooting vertical (yeah!); but it ONLY HOLDS ONE BATTERY!! Who thought this was a Good Idea!?! Yeah, you can have a second battery in the normal body's spot; but to change it, you have to remove the grip EVERY TIME. Bad idea! I'm not going to do that.
I guess the elegant solution would be to BUY the BL-3 door for the MB-D10, and BUY additional D2x/D3s EN-/EL4a batteries. Do I hear "let's make 'em spend MORE!"? Grrr.
In the end though, it will be convenient to have interchangable battaries for the D2x/D3 and the D300 (I shoot with both at the same time). For now, I'll just use one at a time, think about how much lighter the camera is with one battery, and keep a spare in my pocket.
Sorry for the rant; I just hated being surprised by the one battery holder. So, heads up future MB-D10 owners; and plan ahead about what you are going to do.
