Re: D300 arrived

Bill, I have no such problems with using my D200 batteries in my D300. Also, for a "small fee", you can buy a new grip door/battery holder that will allow you to use the batteries from the D2x & D3. I think this is a great idea, not to mention allowing you to use a bigger battery!

quite costly IMO, the battery door is OK, but the battery it self cost about $100.00 and the charger cost another $150.00. Unless you already own a D2X......

Re: D300 arrived

The ability to use standard AA batteries in the add on holder is quite cool. Usually Nikon makes us buy all Nikon Stuff. Nice to see the change. Now, if they would just make a 360 degree sensor on the SU-800, life would be so good!

Re: D300 arrived

Michael, you are right; but I do own a D2x, hopefully soon a D3. Having 1 kind of battery in my bag would be nice.

James, you are so right about the single sensor on SB-800s; I end up using Pocket Wizards more than I would like. At least a sensor on BOTH SIDES of the flash would be a huge improvement.

Also, does anyone know how to configure the D300's Playback display mode so that I can get a larger histogram and less info bars that take up half the screen?

When I'm shooting, I want to check the histogram easily and instantly; and now it only displays on about an 1/8 of the LCD. Right now, there is very limited options for the playback mode (2). Also, the highlite view is only selected by a 3 step menu selection, unlike the D2x and D200 where you could scroll to with the multiselector. I don't like having to explain to a client "what that black flashing stuff" is on the LCD.

I'm hoping this oversight is taken care of in the first firmware update, cause it is not what I expect from this camera; and there is NO reason for the menu to be like this.

Ken

thanks James, I meant that I have alkaline AA batteries in the vertical grip but no battery in the camera itself.

I've since worked out that I have two original Nikon Batteries and that the grip on my D300 is using the battery first while the in-camera battery is the backup.

The Nikon reps have told me that there's a lot of wiring inside the real Nikon batteries while the copies can't be the same quality.
The D200 grip I'm using is an aftermarket one and not an original Nikon MB D200... so the aftermarket batteries and grip combined work well on my D200 but I have to have another look at how they work with my D300 thanks Ken, just to make sure I wasn't imagining what I thought was happening.

Michael Gunawan I already own the D2h which uses the same batteries as the D2x of which I bought a second hand one from a local photographer friend whom now has the D3... for the ease of use all round I don't think a few hundred bucks is a lot of money.

Then... after all is said and done... I'll get a D3 eventually but you know what? ... ... for now I'm gonna look for a second hand D2hs on e-bay.

Bill.

Re: D300 arrived

I just got my D300 . . first impression . . . definitely not the tank like build of my D2h.
The controls are well laid out however. Now, I will get down to taking some photos & see what the images look like. It's getting dark so my timing seems perfect to check the higher ISO settings.
