Re: D300 arrived

Any comments on how the focusing compares to the D200? I'm also interested in how the ISO 100 works?

Re: D300 arrived

I searched everywhere in Sydney today for the D300 then finally found one in Nth Sydney with an E-shop (D-D-photographics)
(My friends at Nikon Australia helped me track down whom still had one of these rare beasts).
I'm driving up there Thursday afternoon (tomorrow) to pick it up; I want it for Sunday at the drags.

I've got two 70-300 4-5.6 AF D-ED lenses... the best lenses I can find for shooting the sport of Drag Racing. (can't wait for the 80-400 f4 AF-S... the 70-200 2.8 AF-S is a great lens but lacks a little reach)

I'm gonna place one lens on the D200 the other on the D300 then see which camera irritates me less. I'm taking my trusty D2h along for Justin'.

I'm sure that I'll have a simple opinion in laymans terms ready sometime next week.

I'm not ever gonna put my name on a waiting list because it seems from reading posts that sometimes the early bird gets a lemon.
I love my D2h but once again three weeks after I bought it they had a D2hs for sale in replacement.
That was AU$5400 for a camera made obsolete while I was trying to re-build my business with limited funds while I could've used the better high ISO jpegs to make more money.
It is only that there are almost enough tests done to date that I decided to chase one down before the weekend.

Today I watched ten actors test/perform a script for a film I've worked on for eight years now while the rest of Australia laid Bernie Banton to rest with a State service at Homebush.

what a long day

And long live the legacy of Bernie!

I can't confirm but maybe one of you can confirm or deny.

I bought a bunch of batteries on E-bay, they are marked "Nikon" but they may be Hong Kong copies.
I know that I have at least one Nikon battery which came with the D200 originally (hopefully).
I have charged them all (about 10 batteries) and charged them twice or more...

None of them will show up as full on the D300 (in fact the opposite) but are full on the D200.

I've put Energizer batteries into the cartridge that came with the vertical grip and it all works.
There's no battery in the camera, only in the grip???
I wonder how long this will work?

Battery issues or cheap copies I don't know yet. But it's a little annoying to say the least.
This makes it three different battery type needed for all my Nikons.

Re: D300 arrived

I wonder, if we put battery in the camera AND the grip, which one it's using first ? If the camera always use the grip's as default, then it's OK, meaning that the battery in the camera act as a backup, just in case we don't have time (yet) to replace the battery in the grip

Re: D300 arrived

I got mine the Monday after Thanksgiving. I was going to pass on it and pick up another D200 for a second body, but it rained, nobody was working and I had too much time to spend on the Web reading everyone's raves....

So I called around and located one at the Gwinnett Place Wolf's, drove halfway around Atlanta in the rain and threw the plastic on the counter.....

I'm now really glad I succumbed, it's such a better camera than the D200. Well worth the money, today's technology versus two-year-old technology. Today wins by at least a stop or two.

Bill, the base of the camera as an access cover for a battery in the area where your right hand holds the camera.

Re: D300 arrived

Michael, you can select which battery you want to use first; the one in the grip, or the one in the body. An icon on the LCD tells you which battery the camera is using.

Thanks for the idea of using the camera body's battery as emergency backup. I don't want to have to remove the grip every day to recharge the battery.
