D1/x/h 340 Microdrive Restrictions?

While browsing the Nikon site I noticed that the D1/D1x/D1h have "restrictions" on the 340MB Microdrive. A call to Nikon left me with no answers, as no tech could tell me the restrictions on the 340MB drive. Two techs told it was supported, but not recomended, and one said it was not supported while the 512MB and 1GB are supported.

Since I have 340MB drives for my NC2000e and intend on using them when I purchase either a D1x or DCS720x (where they work and are supported) I'd like to know the restrictions.

Anyone have an answer to this one? I wish Nikon had an answer.

Re: D1/x/h 340 Microdrive Restrictions?

I have 2 340mb drives and 1 works the other doesn't (w/D1X). So my guess is that the firmware is different. The one that was manufactured in Japan works and the one that was manufactured in Thailand doesn't. I'd like to hear from others that work and don't work. maybe the manufacturing location is a clue to the firmware.

I have used one 320MB card and it worked. But most of the time my 2 1GB cards provide enough capacity.

Re: D1/x/h 340 Microdrive Restrictions?

From my upcoming book:

Microdrive Compatibility
Drive Size and ID D1 D1x D1h
170MB (no D at end of SN) N N N
340MB (no D at end of SN) N N N
170MB (D at end of SN) U Y Y
340MB (D at end of SN) U Y Y
512MB (no 0xx at end of SN) U Y* Y
1GB (no 0xx at end of SN) U Y* Y
512MB (0xx at end of SN) U Y Y
1GB (0xx at end of SN) U Y Y
N = not compatible (stated by IBM or Nikon), Y = compatible (stated by IBM or Nikon), U = anecdotal evidence indicates that they work (compatibility hasn’t been officially stated by IBM or Nikon)
* D1x models with firmware 1.01 or later

Re: D1/x/h 340 Microdrive Restrictions?

Hi Thom,

The drive that I have that works is SN XHA54452 97B, the unit that doesn't work is SN XHAD1921 9BB, I'm assuming that the serial number is just below the bar code. The unit that works doesn't have a D at the end?

Re: D1/x/h 340 Microdrive Restrictions?

Thom,

I concur with Jeff_M. My serial number is:

XHA950xx xxB with no D at the end either.

I have successfully used mine with a D1 without a problem. However, since I read that people were having issues, I decided to "retire" it and have been using 128MB and 256MB cards instead.

Just more input for you...good book by the way! )

Re: D1/x/h 340 Microdrive Restrictions?

If a 340 appears to work, should there be something to look for such as, lost images, corrupted data, unsupported features etc. or is it a case where the drive either works or it doesn't.

thanks again,

Jeff
