SB-800 off camera

I used to post on Rob's forum, I missed the wisdom that could be found there so I joined again.
Does anyone have a good method (read doesn't cost $300.00) for getting the SB-800 flash off the camera while maintaining all of the features of the flash being on the shoe?
I have the short coily cord which does that function but after 3 feet or so you risk pulling the flash over if you move at all.
I am looking to replicate a standard 2 or 3 light setup using SB-800s.
Thanks
James Haba

Re: SB-800 off camera

Thats easy if you are using the D200.

Place the D200 in commander mode.
Place the SB-800s in remote. Use the on camera flash for a trigger

Control each remote sb-800 from the camera.

D2x will work as well but you must then have a one flash connected to the camera.

Hey,
I don't know whether you are using a D2X or not, but if I were you, I would look into the SU-800 wireless remote commander from Nikon.

The D70 will also function in commander mode but only with a single group. I think the D80 will also function as a commander.

What camera are you using?

Yes, that is a great idea except it violates my "doesn't cost $300.00" criteria.
I am thinking that there has to be some kind of cord, made by someone, that is 20' or so (not curly) that can do this. I have the D2H.

Does anyelse use the SB-800 in a multiple setting?? If so, what does your setup look like?
Thanks

Re: SB-800 off camera

James,
The really neat thing about the SB-800 is that it works very well wirelessly. There is no need for cords. It's what Gary described. (You will have to spend about $300 each for the flashes.) Do we understand what you want?

You can also string them together with the SC-27 or SC-10 but they are just under 10' long and don't coil like the SC-17 or 29.

Using these flashes wirelessly only work if the sensor on the side of the flash is not obscured. It's best then not to use the extra battery compartment for the wireless setup.

Re: SB-800 off camera

James... an SU-800 is the way to go... and its $250.

I have 4 SB-800's and normally carry two of them, plus the SU-800, all the time. You can pretty much light anything with this setup if you read Strobist.com front to back. (And there you will learn that you can get great results with less expensive flashes too.)

Pony up the $250. You won't regret it.
