Choice colorsapce for D100

In a discussion today, it came to light that if my photoshop CS2 is set to use the colorspace: sRGB IEC61966-2.1 then my D100 should not be set to use Nikon's sRBG colorspace. i was told to switch it to the standard sRGB setting.

Problem is, sRGB I, sRGB II, or sRGB III are the only choices. So which is the standard Adobe sRGB colorspace?

The working color space for you CS2 should not be sRGB. It should be Adobe RGB, ProPhoto RGB or some other similarly wide gamut color space. The color space you should select in your D100 is Adobe RGB. I also recommend you shoot in raw format. There are some excellent color space tutorials if you search Google for them. You can also get really into it with Bruce Fraser, et al, book "Real World Color Management".

You only need to convert image files to sRGB color space when you are generating JPG files for web display, e-mailing to friends/family/clients, etc.

I agree with Walter, set the D100 to Adobe RGB (1998) and forget it. The images import softer in color, but with the NEF, it is only the previews that are softer in color.

The buffer is a bit slow, and even slower with compressed-NEF, but the results are worth it. Even though I could nail a Velvia transparency in exposure, it was well worth the hassle of shooting NEF with my D100 the past several years.

But, if you are just shooting for yourself and not professionally, sRGB is fine, especially for low-cost printers and commercial photofinishing where sRGB is the norm. Commercially and for editorial where you have the luxury of post processing, then NEF. Journalism where you are on tight deadline, jpeg is fine or if you are a wiz at exposure and color-balance then go for the jpeg.
