Future DX lenses

Now that we're all accustomed to the idea that (gasp!) Nikon is not necessarily planning on a full frame D2, it may be fruitful to come up with a wish list for DX lenses.

There is a good possibility that we can get a lens we've always been waiting for without it costing an arm and a leg.

As a first effort, I'd like to see a 33mm f1.4, or 1.2, or 1.0 prime DX lens. It would give us a state-of-the-art "normal" low-light lens for our D1 family cameras, without costing an arm and a leg.

Maybe Nikon is listening for ideas.

Re: Future DX lenses

Any, I repeat ANY, 1.8 constant aperture zoom.

And then a 2.8 telephoto zoom, say 200-400mm f/2.8 would be cool, but heavy.

9.5mm f/2.8 rectiliniar. Then I can sell my heavy 14mm and no need to wait for FF!

Re: Future DX lenses

No reason why we cannot have the equivalent of say 70-200, 28-100, 80-400 all with a 1.8 constant aperture and all smaller than the current slower lenses. If the likes of the Minolta Dimage 5 & 7, Olympus E20 etc can make monster fast zooms, then it can be done with SLR's that use a CCD the same size as the Nikon D series. Nikon have missed a great opportunity with the 12-24 DX lens, they could have easily made it with a constant f1.8 or f2 aperture and it wouldn't have needed to be any bigger than the 17-35mm lens. That would really have blown the competition away!

Re: Future DX lenses

My hat's off to Nikon for responding to the tremendous demand for wide angle lenses for the current format digital SLRs. Sure I'd like to see a faster version of the 12-24, but an f4 is better than nothing. The D100 has allowed many of us, myself included, to enter the digital SLR format without having to break the bank or carry a tank. Thank you Nikon for complimenting the D100 with a light weight and hopefully affordable solution to the wide angle problem.

Re: Future DX lenses

The lens I have dreamed about for the last who knows how many years, be it for a digital or film body, doesn't matter. The lens is a 12-1000mm f1.0 zoom, no bigger or heaver than the 80-200 2.8. And at a price that anyone serious about photography could afford.

Just think of the possibilities with a lens like that. You would only need to carry around one lens for each body.

I know what you are all thinking. This guy has lost it. But that is what I would like to see. I know it wont happen. But I can dream, can't I?

Take care all,

Jan

Re: Future DX lenses

i'd like to see all the new DX lenses sealed tight, the way the current AF_S hi-end lenses are, so that NO dust gets in.

i want to see the image quality of each DX lens, without compromise, match that of the Mamiya 7, the crispest, sharpest, dah dah dah, production lenses i've ever on film bods.

dream on...
