Re: Future DX lenses

how about just a simple, robust 17mm f1.8, small, unobstrusive, fast autofocus.

tokina is the only company that makes anything like this, at f3.5, too slow.

i was going to get it anyway, but i'm waiting now to see what the 12-24 feels like. but even that will still be too big and too slow (f4.0!)

nikon should make a DX version of their classic 24mm f2 or 28mm f2. in DX format, that would be 16mm, 17mm, or 18mm. and if they give us an extra stop or half-stop to f1.8 or f1.4, then all my problems with wide-angle on digital will be solved.

Re: Future DX lenses

What about just a nice fisheye lens. That is what I miss the most! Something equivilent to the 14mm 2.8. So that would be like a 9mm dx lens?

Re: Future DX lenses

Hi jlphotog,

The problem with a 12mm-1000mm f1.0 lens is that no mater how much money and technology you throw at it, the front element will be at least 1000mm in diameter. I don't think that I can hand hold that.

More practical lenses might be:

18-70 f1.8, 52mm filter size.
70-280 f1.8-f2.8, 105mm filter size.
45-135 f1.8, 82mm filter size.
28-280 f2.0-f4.0, 72mm filter size.
16-80 f1.4-f1.8, 72mm filter size.

Multiply all focal lengths by 1.5 for 35mm equivilents of course.

All of these are optically possable. Basically, any exsisting lens could be redisigned for 1/1.5 the focal length and one stop faster in the same physical diameter and slightly shorter length. So you could say, that lenses specifically designed for digital cameras with the D series CCD should be at least one stop faster for the same equivilent focal length as 35mm full frame lenses.

I already have a 25-250mm f2.0 ANGENIEUX from my 35mm movie days that will cover a D100 CCD.

Re: Future DX lenses

Ummm, Since I shoot photojournalism, stock and fine art, I will be switching to Canon after 15 years of using Nikons. I will keep my FM3-A and a 24 2.0 and 85 1.4 for long time exposures and ultra cold weather /high altitude work. The digital gear would be for my staff position here athe Aspen Times.

......That is if they start to favor a small chip instead of a full frame one. Making 4 X 6 foot prints from "Real" chromes is what people are paying me thousands for. Not a digital image that could very well start out as "shopped".

We'll see I guess.

Re: Future DX lenses

But even with a DX lens, an 200mm lens at F/2.0 would need a front element of at least eight inches across!
