SB600 VS SB800?

Hey,
I was wondering if there is a real advantage to buying either the SB800 vs SB600?
Anyone have any thoughts on the differences and care to share your experiences with either if you use both. I am debating whether the SB800 would really make the difference for my work. I don't shoot with multiple flash heads in commander style shooting or remotely mounted. So, would this make a difference in my choice? Also, does the SB600 shoot in I-TTL? Shooting D200.

Re: SB600 VS SB800?

SB-600 features i-TTL. As you write it can not be used in commander mode; it is also not as powerful as the 800, and it lacks the built-in bounce reflector. It does not come with the translucent dome (but the built-in wide angle thing is in).

Ken Rockwell wroate an article about the differences and why he decided for the SB-600 instead of it's muscular brother.

Re: SB600 VS SB800?

Angel,

I have both flashes and I prefer the SB-8oo as my primary flash unit. The 800 gives you a bit more range which comes in handy for me and with the 5th battery attachment recycle time is very quick. Also the 800 came with a diffusion dome and a built in bounce card so you don't have to worry about getting these as extras. It's really a worth while package. The 600 will shoot I-TTL, I have used the 600 as a primary unit but I really think if you just want one flash, you'd probably like the extras in the 800.

Re: SB600 VS SB800?

Hey Angel,

I used to work with you and Gaspar in Indy several years ago. I have both and I totally agree that you should look at the Ken Rockwell page mentioned above. Not knowing what all you are planning to use it for makes helping you a little difficult. I like the compactnesss and ease of use that the 600 gives me for just on camera use, especially for 1/2 the price.

I have a couple of 800's and the 600 and it is pretty nice to set up a 3 light deal for something quick for editorial and such. If you are just planning to use it for on camera and you don't need the extra stop, the 600 is great. Plus, with the built in flash that you have on the D200, you should still be able to do an off camera shot with just the 600.

I hope you are good! Be in touch.

Chris

Re: SB600 VS SB800?

Hey Chris,
Nice to hear from you man! it's been a long time. Thanks for the input on the subject of the flashes. I like the features of the SB800 but the cost is a bit prohibitive for me till next month. I just thought that if there really was not that major difference, then the SB600 would be fine. I will keep my cash ready and purchase the 800. Hope you're well. Trying to get some gigs here in NYC, doing weddings etc. Got one coming up in Budapest and southern Hungary with ex girl, that is getting married there. She's paying expenses for it so why not. Take care and stay in touch.
