Guy - I am not disagreeing with your post, but I for one would welcome new ultra teles with VR. For those of us who need to work with these lenses without the benefit of tripods nor being able to set up shots as we need them, VR should allow us to nail the image where we would have normally had camera shake present. I'll take all the aids and accessories I can take if it helps me to get the picture I want.
