D2x w/ sb800 fill flash, long exposure

I am looking for what is probably a simple answer to a silly question. Earlier today I was doing an interior shot, shutter priority, somewhere around 1/8th of second at f8. Exposure at 200 asa was fine. So then I attached my sb800 and dialed it in with a -1 stop compensation, same exposure as the first w/o flash and shutter priority. Instead of getting an exposure identical to my first exposure, with the exception of a small amount of fill flash, I get an exposure that is a stop or two under exposure with the ambient light and a little bit of flash added to it. What am I doing wrong? It probably does not matter, but I was using a Sigma 12-24 lens that I will be selling on eBay and getting the Sigma 10-20 lens. Thanks.

Your choices are TTL and TTL/BL (Balanced Lighting) You should press the button one more time to get rid of the BL. You cannot use BL in darker situations, since it wil only "balance" with a very low power, while you want your subject lit well. Also use this setting for darker evening situations, even shooting everything auto.

Re: D2x w/ sb800 fill flash, long exposure

you also mention shooting in shutter priority. When you add the flash the camera automatically sets the shutter speed to the mimimum you have selected in the menu. Generally this is 1/60. Try turning on the rear flash sync. Everything will work perfect then. The camera will then meter for the ambient and set the meter accordingly, then the flash fires at the end and adds a little light and is metered seperate from the ambient light.

PS Nikon glass is the best....

Have fun.....
