D1 Errors/Problems/Help

I have recently purchased a used D1. After shooting with it for three weeks I noticed a few gliches, but two that worry me considerably.

First: The camera sometimes will not let me release the shutter and flashes c-rem00 on the top LCD screen. My buffer is not full. This happens on the first shot, in continuous and single mode. To remedy it I have to turn the camera off and then back on before I can take another shot. Not sure what is causing this as it only started happening about a week ago.

Second: I have noticed a square grid pattern in my bright reds and yellows when reviewing the images on my computer and when I print them out. Is this a CCD problem? Am I missing something here? This happens outdoors in bright sunlight and overcast, and indoors with flash.

Any suggestions or hints from former or current D1 users would help alot. Anyone that has run into this problem before please reply.

Thank you.

Neal,
Can't say for sure, but one thing I have noticed from the D1 is that if the battery is low or old, strange stuff happens, like what you mentioned. How old is the battery? Also, make sure all elaectrical contacts are clean.
Hope this helps. The D1 is my backup these days and I still really like the output from it.

Re: D1 Errors/Problems/Help

To my knowledge, one of the batteries is quite new, the other was the original, so maybe 6 years old. I thought it may be a battery issue (more like I hoped it was) but when I put in a freshly charged battery, I got the same result.

Re: D1 Errors/Problems/Help

Neal -
even a freshly charged battery can give problems if it is old. Anything older than 18 months for these NiCD battery packs is old and time to replace. A good alternative that I am using with my D1H is the battery from Delkin. They are half the price of the Nikon batteries and they are a higher capacity so they last a bit longer.

As for the lock-up problem, it can be caused by bad batteries, and another possible cause for this is that if you change lenses without turning off the camera first you can get some weird problems with the body. Of the original four D1 cameras that our paper had three of them got flaky if you swapped lenses without remembering to shut the camera down first. A real pain for me as I swap on the fly quite a lot, or I did when I was just shooting with one body.

Re: New Batteries

Hopefully the battery is the issue. Given that, what are the opinions out there of other generic brnad batteries that you see flooding Ebay? Are they any good, or should I stick to Nikon or in your case Delkin?

I've had very good service with Battery Barn batteries. I no longer have the D1X, but the BB batteries were the best I'd seen.
