I know this type of thing has been posted several times but it's new to me so bear with please.
Just received a "mint" but mildly used D2h from an authorized reseller here in Canada. Had the thing for two weeks or so, just got the swing of it, and now twice in one day, I get the "ERR" message.
Two things:
1) The battery was below five per cent when this happened (both times) *not sure if that has something to do with or not.
2) If I pushed the shutter it would fire, and the message would disappear.
Any advice?
I loathe to send it back obviously.
TIA

I had a similar thing happen to me with my brand new D2X. It progressively got worse/more frequent and I had to send it back to Nikon. It took them about a week (not NPS) to repair it and get it back to me. On the receipt it said they did a cleaning and adjustment but since then its worked great. Big difference was that mine did it on a fully charged battery.
I'd test it using a good battery, but if it continues it may need to go in.
Strange things can happen when near the end of a charge. For instance my D2X images look as if a gradation filter was put over them when shooting with less than 5% charge. Top is underexposed but bottom is fine. change the battery and the issue goes away.
Thanks Ken we'll see. I swapped the battery out, and so far so good. Today was the first time it has even hiccupped in two weeks of heavy use. My fingers are crossed!
I had a similar problem with a used D1 bought two months ago that looked brand new. The camera would get "blank" images after a few shots on a freshly charged battery. This went away with a few discharge/charge cycles of the batteries. A battery at 5% is at a point where it should be recharged and not "deep-Discharged" where permanent damage can be done to its capacity. My guess is that the batteries could not put out enough voltage/current for the camera to "boot up" and operate properly. "err" seems an appropriate response.
i agree, the good thing about the lith-ion batts is they can be recharged at any working point with no ill affects as opposed the the now archaic nicads. the down side is running them down to failure is not good for the battery. at 110mins a recharge and the ability to shoot hundreds of images, it should not be a prob avoiding 5% bat charge
Yeah, I agree, just so busy wasn't paying close attention to how low the battery really was, I'm guessing 10 per cent would be a good point to swap out a battery? Anyone care to comment on this? And does it really harm the new Nimh batteries to run them dead?
I think you have a shutter problem here.
My D2H also displayed 'err' after the first picture was taken when I turned the camera on after some time. It would record the image but dispay 'err'. Second shutterrelease, no image but 'err' disappeared. After that no problems until the camera was turned off and on again after some time.
Nikon NL replaced the shutter for 299,-
The D2H batteries are so good they will keep on going until 3%. Below that the camera will not turn on.
