It depends on the facility - a lot of high-end pro venues have television lighting that is daylight ballanced, so that is easy to deal with. The problem is that smaller venues often use lower-grade lights that while bright are not as well balanced - in these situations the best bet is usually to use the preset functionality. To do this on the D1-series you do the following:

[*] Get a grey card (can be any neutral object, however grey cards are best) and walk out onto the field/court/etc. before the game while the game lights are on. If you can't do this (you often can't), get as close to the field as you can.[*] Press the menu button, then go to the shooting menu and finnally White Bal. In that menu, locate the WB Preset entry and press right on the control pad. Select the Set entry.[*] Place the grey card so that the arena lighting is shining on it and frame it using the camera so that it fills the entire viewfinder. For best results, make sure that the image is out of focus as doing that will average out any inconsistancies on the card's surface. Trip the shutter to capture the preset image.[*] Another menu will appear asking you which preset bank to use, select one of them and press right on the controller (this menu allows you to store three different presets in the camera's memory).[*] The camera will now use the whitebalance set by this step for subsequent pictures.
With some lighting you will still have problems - so if you can't nail the WB it is usually a good idea to shoot NEF wherever possible so that you can recover wierd colour casts. You mention that it is a pro arena, so hopefully these issues won't be a problem as they are usually reserved for the crappy lighting in high-schools and some university sports facilities.

    thanx

now i know why failed WB, couse there was tv light also( i forgot that is daylight )

    just a question:

you talked about D1 about procedures to set "preset WB" or you have a D1x or D2h?couse i think have a slight different menuŽ

i had no problems with change color cast couse i saw that ACDsee changed very good color cast also with jpg shoots, but now i ll try find a good wb plug in for photoshop.

ps yes the light in pro arenas are very good (in quality and quantity: i can shoot f.2.8 at 1/400 or also 1/500)

Yup, I was using my D1H as a template - I guess the D1 is slightly different in that accord. The instructions should be in your manual, however, just look in the index for White Balance and one of the entries should cover the WB preset method. Once you get used to doing it it becomes second nature as it only takes a few moments and is the best way to ensure that when the action starts you don't have to fiddle with the controls.

Definately good to hear - chances are it is daylight balanced then, so give that a shot and it might do what you need

Hello Orwell,
Here's a link to an on-line manual:

http://www.nikonusa.com/pdf/D1rm.pdf

Go to page 32 and it explains the procedure for setting the PRE White Balance...
