Focus problems with digital photography across the

I realize this is an issue that has been discussed before, but I am really having a problem. I shoot for and work with the photo department at a television network. We use a number of different Nikon digital cameras, and I own a Nikon D100. Several of my colleagues and I have discussed a very definite back-focus problem with a few different cameras particularly when shooting with wide-angle lenses, and at f/2.8. I am using the Nikkor 17-35 2.8, and the 35-70mm 2.8. I don't have as much of a problem when I shoot a medium close-up of, say, on-air personalities on set, but have fairly large problems when shooting a few people on a set with a lot of details. The back-focus is pronounced. I am checking my focus with the confirm light, and have been shooting in both auto and manual focus modes. Getting a little worried. Anyone else experiencing this issue? I do shoot under somewhat difficult lighting conditions often at f/2.8 at a 100th of a second at high ISO settings. The noise is not an issue, but focus is tough. Not just general soft-focus, but definite back focus problems. please forgive the long message.

im having the same with my d100 and 12-24mm... shooting from a distance, it's very soft.. it's not a noise problem, it's a focus issue...

I'm having the same problem with 200 asa, 1/4th and F4 with 12-24mm. Working on tripod, nevertheless it looks like everything on focusdistance is real soft. Distance from 8 to 10 meters.

Even when it's working, I don't think the 17-35 is a really sharp lens. Even in low light, I hate to drop beneath 5.6. My last 17-35 developed this problem which NPS fixed three or four times and then finally gave up on and gave me a new lens. The problem was that the lens wouldn't focus on any object further than 5 feet away. I know you said "back focus", which would be the opposite of this, but are you seeing my problem as well?

Re: Focus problems with digital photography across

as for the last post, have to disagree about the 17-35. Mine has consistantly been top notch, and I shoot very often at 5.6 to 2.8. The problem described here seems tobe a body issue, not a lens one, unless of course there is a specific problem with that lens in particular.

Re: Focus problems with digital photography across the

I use a D-100 as backup body and I am getting ready to send it in for adjustment. Focus was ok when new but now that it is 7 mo. old it won't even focus on a stationary subject 9 out of 10 times at any focal length (17-300mm). Our local paper photographers use D-100 and several of them have the same problem. I guess I should have bought the D70 instead.

I have never had a sharp image from my 17-35mm set at 17mm 2.8. It is fine stopped down to around f/3.5 but f/2.8 always is soft. My 24mm f/2.8, 50mm f/1.4 and 85mm f/1.8 are all sharp at those settings.
