Will A D70 handle Sports Photo Work??

Been using my brothers D1H for youth sports work in soccer, football, and cheer shots. Been great with a 300mm 2.8F and a 70-200 lens. But I have to turn the D1H back over and wondering if the D70 has enough for my future sports work. Looking at just shooting ameture high school and youth sports. Everytime I go to a camera shop, the sales people seemed confused. Any insight??

WIll the D70 handle sports work? Well that all depends on what your standards are? I have never used a D70, But I imagine with some skill it will allow you to make some nice sports pictures. The plain fact, though, is that the D70 shoots at 3fps, while the D1H shoots at 5 or 6, I believe. That's a significant difference. So all other things being equal, the D1H will make better sports pictures.

On most of my motor drive bursts, I select the first frame so the D-70 would work well. If you feel you need the high speed motor you may want to stick with the D-1H or the new D-2X recently announced. The quality of the D-70's file should not be a problem as the quality will equal the D-1H or D-2X.

I use 2 D70s for youth sports work and there has only been a couple of times that I wish it was faster then 3FPS. There is virually no shutter lag which I find more important then FPS.

Eventially I will probably upgrade to the D2H but I can not justify the cost at this point. I bought 2 D70s one with the kit lens and 70-200VR for very little more then 1 D2H. This way I have a backup and a good lens.

Why not just pick up a used D1H? I've seen a few go for about the price of a D70 and if you've been ok with the D1H, then why change?

I use both cameras, I find the colour and the meter to be much better than the d2h. Hardly ever have to tweak the colour coming from the d70

Re: Will A D70 handle Sports Photo Work??

I don't shoot sports and I don't own a D70, so feel free to totally ignore my posts.

That said, I use a D100 for my studio shoots, concert photography and press conference events and I really hate it. The image quality is stunning, but using the camera each day is not pleasant. Having used the F5 for several years, I have gotten used to a certain build quality and a certain autofocus speed. Both are lacking on the D100.

From what I've heard, the D70 is a small step down from the D100. It's harder to grip because it smaller and you can't add the vertical grip. The viewfinder is a bit dimmer, and I would imagine that its a bit slower in the autofocus department as well.

I would never use a camera like that for shooting sports -especially if I enjoyed shooting with a pro camera like the D1. I would suggest you invest in a used D1x. They go for as low as $2,000 on this forum and on www.sportsshooter.com.
