well as I am sure many people say, it does depend on user. I like the D70 because of the higher sync speed. I strobe alot of my sports and the 1/500 works great. Look at my site under recent work, the volleyball, the two hockey shots with the guy in the air and the hockey shot with the guy on the ground were all taken with the D70. (the rest were taken with the D100)

As a car photographer, i don't really need a fast camera however with my tracking shots i'm not yet used to the sluggish and slow D100.... If i come to a situation where i'm shooting sports, i'll just revert back to my F100 or F5... Basically for me it's too slow but the D100 is great in other areas.....

Re: Will A D70 handle Sports Photo Work??

G'day all, Brian,

Once again a difficult question to answer for we know nothing of your personal requirements.

As far as I'm concerned, the D70 and D100 are the same deal.
I took my D2h and D70 to the drags. I used my D70 in manual focus because it couldn't keep up with the 'drag bikes' in auto.
The D2h can almost take the photo's without me.

If you've ever stood anywhere near the 'top fuelers'(cars) when the lights finally turn green and the driver presses that big nitro knob then tramps the pedal... when that motor explodes and you don't have ear muffs on... (no swearing)... I reckon the D70 would burn down to crisp cinders and blow away with the wind.

I'm a big fan of "it's up to the quality of the photographer so don't blame the gear".
But if I you was me; I'd get a better camera.

Though the answer to your question is yes.

All the best,
Bill.

Bill: Which part of the drag strip can the D70 not keep up with the action. The most interesting shots come when they are making all the smoke in the burnout box and then again when they take off from the lights were you may see the front wheels leave the track. I find my D100 with the 70-200VR has no trouble capturing this area of the race. I also have no trouble shooting go-karts races with speeds of up to 70 mph (woops showing my age) 110 kph or at the rodeos with all the moving that goes on there. Agreed 3 frames is mostly what those 2 cameras hold you to in Raw but they certainly can keep up at that rate. hcarl

Carl..

When you're shooting gokarts, can you shoot on Raw and get a sequence of shots? ->
When i shoot, i tend to get a first shot, then lag, then another shot and i end up having to get the driver to drive past many times as i seem to only get one shot in each sequence.. it feels slow after the first shot.

Jun: I can take 3 Raw shots in a row, in fact the first sequence is 4 shots and then wait and then if the wait is long enough it will be 3 each time after that. I use Continuous Service Af, Continous Shooting , usually Matrix metering, 5 spot focus, Raw uncompressed and closest subject off, and have my 70-200 VR set with VR on and start prefocusing on a particular cart well ahead of were I want to take the pictures. Works fine for me. hcarl
