... has anyone else ever had their D2H shoot a black frame ( sometimes a few in a row ) I was shooting fully manual, all shots before the black exposed frames were perfectly exposed according to the histogram ( nice bell curves ) and lcd.
I believe this to be a heat issue as the only times it happened i was shooting hundreds of frames

I have a D1x, D1, and D2h that will all, for no apparent reason, fire one or more blank frames without pressing the shutter. This happens after the camera has been turned on for a long period of time - it is not necessary to take any pictures. When I grip the camera, the shutter fires multiple frames. The has even happened when other people pick up my camera from a table or chair. Turning the camera off and on will postpone problem.
I don't know if it is heat related - I can have a camera around my neck that is used for a few dozen shots over a two hour event - when I touch the camera, it may fire. Also, it happens on all of my D1-series cameras. Cold events (figure and speed skating) can also have the problem.
A couple of other folks on DPreview have similar experiences.
Nikon "is not aware of any problem in this area" :-) Humm, Nikon is not aware of ANY problems with their cameras.........
It may be static related - a large valued bypass capacitor assoicated with the shutter mechanism may be the real cause of the problem.

I havent noticed this to be a problem except for in the high heat conditions i described, I shot a few thousand images at the Winter-X games in Aspen this year without a single black fame ( over the course of three days ) I HAVE had the camera fire frames off when i picked it up and accidentally hit the vertical shutter release though, what are the odds that the people that picked up your camera did this? i have done it many times myself when i thought the vertical release was locked and of course wasnt!
Also...when im carrying alot of gear and im walking from one shot to the next and one of my cameras is hanging off my body, inadvertantly the shutter release gets pressed ( i leave the camera's on because of the need to grab the camera quickly as a shot arises ) and Nikon is probably unaware of the problem because everyone like me hasnt had a repetitive problem with the black frames, recently i sent one of my D2H's in to get a lens mount repaired ( i tipped it over with my 400mm on and it got torqued ) and i asked them to address the black frame problem...they couldnt get it to fire off a black frame....i dont doubt they couldnt as it has happened to me only sparsly.
I rule out nothing though, static certainly could be an issue in the dusty environments i work in, thanks for the input.

The camera is back from Melville with the original problem resolved. However, I now have a different more obstructive error. The camera blinks "fEE" all the time when the camera is on.
I tried all the suggested solutions for this, based on previous posts: different lens, change the battery, use AC adapter, clean contacts with a rubber eraser. Nothing worked.
I found an old post where dropping the camera out the window was jokingly recommended as a fix. Right now that suggestion seems quite attractive!
Frustrated to no end,
Gerry.

Gery: I don't know if the D2H is much like my D100 but in the D100 troubleshooting guide is says that : fEE (blinking), is Lens aperture ring is not set to minimum aperture. Solution is to set ring to minimum aperture. hcarl

Yes Carl, it says exactly the same in the D2H manual, and a concept I think I fully understand
While at my shoot today I set the ring to its smallest opening and got no love, just fEE...fEE...fEE.
I had the same response from the other lens I had with me. When I came home I tried some other glass hoping for a strange turn of luck, but still nothing but fEE.

Gerry: Just a thought as I had it happen to me with my D100. Sounds like a trip to the shop is in order as something must have gotten out of alignement while in for the last repair. hcarl
