D70 USB cord - longer alternatives for tethered ?

Okay, just started shooting tethered with our D70 this last week and have almost yanked the laptop off the chair or table too many times to count because the darn USB to camera connector is just way too short. Checked with my local camera shop to see if Nikon offered a longer cord, and the cheek pierced (ouch!) clueless gal working had no clue and I could not see any listed when I finally just asked her to give me the catalog to look at myself...

Anyone know if there are longer Nikon cords available or if a simple USB extension cord would work, or could I just plug it into a USB hub to get a few extra feet of cord use?

I know some items like printers get mmody on too long of a cord, so I am not sure if it would affect perfomance but the little short cord that comes with the camera is very impractical when shooting tethered.

Thanks for any input!

Hello Eric,

That's funny mate... the little cord that Nikon provides can be extended all the ways you asked about.

The printers will print from the computer image file so it shouldn't matter.

You should just get one longer cord from Tandy.

Regards,
Bill.

USB extension cord works OK
I've been using a 10 ft extension cord with no problem

Re: D70 USB cord - longer alternatives for tethered ?

Thanks for the confirmation - on my way to buy the much needed extension today!

(although I did learn that watching the photographer dive to the floor in sheer panic to catch a falling dell laptop from a cord yank during a sitting is almost always guaranteed to make a 2 year old subject laugh out loud, I think I'll get the extension cord and find a smile inducer thats much easier on my heart!) Re: D70 USB cord - longer alternatives for tethered ?

i tried doing that with a 15 ft. USB extension cord for my D100.
it did work at times, but many a times the signal got lost; the picture taken
with the camera did not reach the computer & it (computer) showed that the camera
is not attached to the computer.

regards.

No problems with a 10 foot cable. Perhaps that is the limit.

I was told 15 ft is the limit for USB2.0 when I bought my 10ft extension.
