Re: How about

Make your own blimp out of a small sized pelican case. Cut a big hole in the side, glue a 2 inch long section of plastic 4 inch piping, and then glue the biggest cine filter you can find to the front of that. Then get an electronic shutter release, run it though the side, and seal it up with some silicone. Presto, one home made camera blimp. I have one with a glass front for lenses up to 85mm, and then one with an open front that I can use with the 80-200 and 300 lenses. I've done all sorts of film set work, and never had a problem with that.

Re: How about

David,

can you post some photos of your homemade blimp? How did you make the back with the viewfinder and the lcd, is it easy to look through it? I am using Canon and the usm lenses are silent, do you think I need the plastic pipe for the lens? What did you put inside the case?
How do you hold the pelican case, is it good to work with? Do you know the model number?
Photos, please.
I use a Camera Muzzle, but I need a greater noise reduction.

Re: How about

I put a web gallery with some pics of my blimps. The black one a has filter and lens hood on the front, and the grey one is open at the end. The black one is for close up work with lenses ranging from 20mm to 85mm, and the open fronted one is for use with the 80-200 lens at longer distances. A camera opperator and I came up with the theory (debatable to be sure) that most of the camera noise probably transmits through the front of the lens, so you if you're going to be at close range, you want to have the front filter.

I wish I could take credit for this set up, but it's a pretty common item on Vancouver film sets.

The Pelican cases were about $40.00 each, the pipe for the lens extension came from the scraps bin at a lumber yard, and I can't remember what, if anything, they charged me for it. The front filter is huge, and it along with the large lens hood, cost about $50.00 at a used camera shop.

I haven't used these with the my new digital cameras, as it's been a few years since I've done any film set work. I don't think it would be a big problem to cut a new port in the back to see the LCD.

Good luck

Re: D2X shutter noise?

[ QUOTE ]
I am thinking of switching over -- after 25 years -- to the Canon system. I think that the EOS D1/D1s shutter/mirror is quieter. (

[/ QUOTE ]

Be sure not to get a 20D. If you think your D1X/H shutter is loud, just listen to the 20D fire ...

As for the 1-series, I'm not sure how they compare in noise to the D1X/H. I think the 10D was supposed to have a pretty quite shutter though.

Re: How about

Thanks for that David - exactly the sort of info I was after. I will buy a pelican case and try to build this blimp, any further information is appreciated.

Re: D2X shutter noise?

I still get lots of requests for the pictures of my home made camera blimp. Since this posting was made, I've changed servers. Here is the new link to the Blimp Gallery.
