D2H at auto iso >> less noise.

I read aroud the forums but first I was told by Ron, sport photographer who shoots mainly boxing, that when using the auto iso mode, the result will be much less noise at higher iso.
I do not recall that in this forum people spoke about it a lot.
So few nights ago I had to shoot live tv show with no flash and here you see the results.
Photos as came out from my D2H .
Those photos are with much less noise that I was expecting and very very usfull for print.
You can see it also in those that are under exposed.
The color are also very good, see the one of the clown.
What do you think?
And if this the case and the sensor can produced cleaner files at high iso, that means that the noise problem is due firmware and can be fixed by updating it!

Israel--
the photos are good, especially the ones taken at 1600. i don't own a D2H, but I'm wondering how the Auto ISO works -- does the camera tell you what ISO it has selected? and is it easy to override the Auto setting?
i have an issue with letting the camera decide what ISO to use, especially in situations where you, the photographer, need to be in charge.

I hope i'm wrong about this, but as far as a firmware "fix" for the D2H, i don't think they have a solution to the noise issue, and have decided to leave it be. They aren't even using the LBCAST chip in the D2X.

Re: D2H at auto iso >> less noise.

You put the camera to auto iso and to the lowest one the camera will shoot.
This does not working with flash and only at S and M exposure mode.
You can see the iso that the camera took the frame after the shooting as before every release it checks the situation.
It is very usefull when the lights changes all the time.

Israel,

How much post processing did you do to these images? Also, I recently found that by overexposing by about a third of a stop at ISO 800 and above seems to decrease image noise.

I'll try the auto-ISO trick and see if makes a difference.

No post processing! Not at all!
I did overexposed by half of a stop.
You can read the shooting details/EXIF with Nikon View.

Alan,

Israel is right on target!

The techniques was first suggested by Ron Gallegos on Phil Askey's website several weeks ago.

Once the custom menu is set to permit auto ISO, I find it convenient to go into manual mode, set the aperture and shutter speed to the needs of the situation, and shoot. You can see the ISO set by the camera when you review your files in camera where the effective ISO is shown in red -- and find it subsequently in Nikon View.

Ira

Alan, I think you're missing the point. The point being that by letting the camera choose the ISO, it is apparently using some different circuit or processing which greatly reduces the noise at high ISO. You will still be in charge by setting manual and selecting the aperture and shutter, then observing the ISO.

If YOU select the ISO, it will be noisier!
