why raw (NEF) and jpeg fine?

I've been shooting raw with jpeg fine with my D2H, as most folks recommend. However, since I always process the raw file in Capture 4, (and don't do anything with the jpeg) I'm wondering if I should just shoot raw, giving me more space on a card. Can anyone tell me why I shouldn't do that? Thanks for your help.

Sound as if the JPG is a waste of space for you as it would be for me. I don't have the option with my D1X but I see no advantage as I shoot exclusively RAW.

No real reason but say if you used jpeg, perhaps even just basic you would have very fast thumbnails for quick viewing. Of course if you have a smokin computer that wouldn't even be a big deal. Myself I'm still dreaming of that option becuase NEF's are really slow opening on my computer so the jpeg option is something I would like!

the only reason to shoot both would be the need to view thumbnails quickly. If you haven't done it yet, read the from page article on this site re. the Sports Illustrated workflow! It's a great article and describes the need very well. If you don't need that kind of preview speed, I would skip it.

I shoot raw plus basic, because then i have a quick version of the photo for web usage during the realtime coverage of the event. I drop off my cards with the reporter writing the article and they just take the jpegs for a crop/resize/post without any real adjustments. This means they don't have to deal with the intracacies of raw files, and also they can get the files from the cards more rapidly seeing how they're smaller (and the less time my cards are in their hands the happier i am). I save the raw files for submitting to print.
