Don't give up on this. If nothing else, burn the SOBs that sold the camera to you. Your funds may or may not be recoverable, due in part as to whether or not a judgement can be had against the seller, and what it's worth to you in the way of legal costs to recover that amount if a judgement is infact rendered.
The fact that it is federal, and quite possibly wire fraud was committed, you may want to contact the FBI.
Your beef with Nikon should be the least of your worries. Nikon did what they had to in order to protect themselves. What suprises me is that no one from any government agency has contacted you with regard to your receiving stolen property, a claim that Nikon may or may not make. Quite possibly Nikon may not have contacted the police. Could it be that Nikon received insurance money on the camera and received the camera back as well? Hmmm.
You've gotten some really good and cheap legal advice. It's now up to you to run with it and make some noise to the seller. Right now they are fat, dumb and happy. It's time for you and your attorney to change that.

I'm really not that upset with Nikon. I don't blame them for taking what is rightfully theirs. We all would do the same. And don't think for 1 minuete I'm through with the retailer. I will do whatever I can to see they get theirs (within the law). I have one of those prepaid legal services which I will most likely be cancelling. They don't seem to do what I expected when I signed up for it. It was one of my union things and I didn't know what it was about. I guess my biggest disappointment to date is with my visa card as they will not dispute the charge on this. That almost pisses me off as much as the retailer. Sorting through and following up on all the advise you all have giving me is the hard part.
Thanks all,

Until Nikon supplies you proof that the camera was stolen from them, they are stealing it from you by not returning it.
If they were paid on an insurance claim then the camera is the property of the insurance company and Nikon still does not have the right to keep it, they have to give it to the insurance company or refund the claim payment. Your lawyer should be demanding copies of all of that paperwork as proof.

We need a name to associate with Stolen Camera Registry.
Thanks.
