Re: Be very careful who you buy from

If you bought in June the dime is on your credit card company - most cards have an insurance policy that will cover this type of stuff. Dispute the charge and your CC company will credit the amount in question to your card - then turn around and buy a new one from a reputable dealer.

Forget about going after the seller - you'll have a devil of a time proving they knew it was stolen property. Nikon probably isn't going to do much either - but you could try calling their customer service department and insist on going higher and higher until somebody pays attention. But... why? You won't be out anything due to the CC insurance. You'll get a new camera and be done with it. If your credit card company (or its insurance company) wants to go after the reseller and/or Nikon, *they* can do it. If your homeowner's insurance is anything like 99.999999999998% of the insurance companies out there in the world, they'll drag their feet about paying off on this. And you'll be out whatever your deduct. is. Screw that. I'd insist that your cc company handle this and refund your money. If they want to go after somebody else, hey, God Bless, let 'em do it. But you've got no responsibility to go after anyone.

Why should you get involved in something that you had nothing to do with?

Sure, it's frustrating... but you've got a great "out"... take it and be done with it.

Re: Be very careful who you buy from

Thanks for all the input. I really do appriciate it. If what you say is true about Nikon reporting it stolen and collecting insurance money for the stolen camera than I feel Nikon should send it back to me now that I have proven to them that I bought it legally. They still are holding it at Torrance for the buffer upgrade. According to my CC company it could take quite a while to settle the dispute and I need my/a camera before Thanksgiving. Guess I'll play it by ear. That of course would be too easy.

Re: Be very careful who you buy from

Yes, but keep in mind the dispute is NOT between you and Nikon or your credit card company and Nikon - it is between you and the reseller.

While your credit card company may say that it will take time to solve the dispute, most will credit your account for the disputed amount while the claim is being researched. If they later determine your claim has no merit they'll revoke the credit - I don't see that happening based upon what you've said. If I were you I'd stop having conversations with Nikon - what they do or don't do has zero bearing on whether or not the reseller sold you a hot camera.

Perhaps a letter from your attorney to the credit card company would be helpful.

Re: Be very careful who you buy from

Hoggy, I feel for your you. What a bummer.

A few ramblings.

1. Without naming names, does the internet retailer have a brick and mortor business?

2. Call Nikon and ask for a copy of the police report. Ask them from what city the camera was stolen and contact that city's police department. They can't just keep the camera without showing some proof. If they didn't report it stolen they can't keep it.

3. Did you buy the camera as new? If so, does your receipt have the serial number on it?

4. Call the seller. If they were an authorized dealer there was plenty of paperwork on the camera. They should make it right.

5. If you bought it as new but they weren't an authorized dealer, file a police report. They should be liable.

6. If your receipt states used or demo, still file a police report though you probably wouldn't get satisfaction from the seller.

7. I don't own a D1X but a D100. I didn't have a warranty card to return. The dealer handles that. I would have expected the same with the D1X. I wonder what you returned in June.

8. Good luck. Be rational but don't give in!

Philip

I'm curious too whether you purchased this camera new or used.

Be very careful who you buy from

Sent my D1x in for buffer upgrade. Turns out my D1x was stolen from Nikons inventory. I have legal action in progress so can't say more. I can say it was bought online from a retailer and not a private person. I am not a pro and this hurts terribly as I can't afford to buy another camera. Bad thing is I told this retailer I had to have a USA camera and it is but stolen.

Re: Be very careful who you buy from

I purchased it NEW. I have the reciept to prove it plus copies of several emails to the seller getting confirmation it was indeed a USA camera because of the price I was paying. Well I got the USA camera and also the shaft it seems but ....... And no the serial # was not on the receipt. Wish I had known more other than the fact I needed to make sure it was USA Nikon. Learning a hard lesson at 52 yrs old. Either way I doubt I'll get enough money to buy another D1x. May go out today and pick up a D100 locally(not through internet). Makes me wonder if the SB28DX I got from them is hot too. Guess I'll do the right thing and call Nikon about it Monday. I have many faults but I'm honest.
