Re: More sample shots

Thanks Peter for sharing your pics. It seems to me I
see a bit of softness there but this might be a result
of the bad conditions(rain, cloudy whether and lack of
contrast). Are these out of the camera unchanged photos?
A close head and shouldera with and without flash would
give a better indication about this lens sharpness,
color and contrast handling. Are you satisfied? Did you
use the 17-35 before?

Re: More sample shots

You're right, the weather here is terrible! The office shots seem pretty sharp to me, though I might have used a higher shutter speed. Will try some portraits tomorrow.
Yes, I have been using the 17-35: my hunch is that the new lens will surpass it, and not just for the longer zoom range.

The jpgs were converted from NEFs in NC4.1: the only modification was adding 'normal' sharpening since I keep my D2h set to no sharpening in camera.

Re: More sample shots

I have added a few comparison shots of 17-55 vs 17-35. The new lens seems particularly sharp at the long end. All medium jpg, converted from NEF in NC4.1, in camera (D1x this time) sharpening set to normal.

My 17-35 is now over four years old, and the zoom has got quite stiff, so the new lens inevitably handles better: no observable weight penalty, though I will have to watch the amount of air it sucks into the mirror box (like other high ratio zooms).

Re: More sample shots

Have you tried any polarizer to check if it produces any vignetting?

It works just fine with a polariser

Re: More sample shots

Hi Graham,
Sorry forgot to respond to your request to use f22!
I almost never shoot with that depth of field and don't have anything from my jobs.
If I get a chance, I shall do an f22 and post it.

Cheers,

Edmond

Re: More sample shots

Hello again!
Just shoved my camera out of my window and did some f22 shots!
Check http://www.pbase.com/terakopian/root
As before, they are straight from the camera (jpeg) and untouched.
