Rebuilding EN-4 Batteries

About a week ago, I was talking to a Nikon rep and mentioned that the one thing I've always been disappointed about with the D1X are the anemic EN-4 batteries that run out of juice fairly quickly.

He then told me about a place I could send them to have them rebuilt. A Batteries Plus location in the Southeast, forgot where. He didn't know the address and when I called and spoke with a Nikon rep tonight at the Nikon hotline, that guy didn't know anything about it at all.

Anyone have the name and address of the place the first guy was talking about? He said that after being rebuilt, they were good for up to 500 shots.

Re: Rebuilding EN-4 Batteries

You can by the Polaroid knock offs for $33 a piece if you web search.
(Item code PR114DG).
Seems simpler for those of us not right by a Batteries Plus.
I have 3 with no complaints (they fixed the latch issue).
Anyone had luck with aftermarket D100 replacement cells?
Marc

Keep your nikons and buy the polaroids, if there is a bad fit on the endcaps you can take the ends off of the nikon and put them on the polaroids, just 3 small screws no wires or springs, just need a small phillips scredriver, works great

Re: Rebuilding EN-4 Batteries

Hi,

I rebuilt a couple of my original D1 packs with NiCd cells. That made for a major change in the way the camera operates. The older chemistry is better able to handle the peak current demands of the camera. The battery meter operates properly as well. When it hits that 'half' mark, it is indeed time to swap out the pack.

However, rebuilding a pack takes time and you need a spot welder to properly connect the new cells together. I don't recommend rebuilding your own for most folks. Batteries Plus does do this, as has been noted, using better NiMH cells than the originals. I do not know if you could talk them into using NiCd in place of NiMH. I suppose it would depend on the individual at the store doing the work.

With the aftermarket packs available fo so low a cost, I agree with just buying those. It cost me $40 just for the NiCd cells, and I still had to perform surgery on the pack to make it happen.

Stan

Re: Rebuilding EN-4 Batteries

Does anyone know if anyone in the UK rebuilds EN-4's?
I'm really surprised that Nikon (or a prominent 3rd party company) hasn't offered higher capacity battery packs for the D1 series, or better still, found a way of adapting the D100 li-ion battery technology for the D1.

regards
Andrew

Re: Rebuilding EN-4 Batteries

The ideal solution would be for Nikon to provide a Li-on battery for the D1 series. That would be too good to be true.

I am in the process of converting a Li-on pack for the D1X, but haven't completed it yet. Someone has a web site for this but I don't have it handy.

Also, Batteries Plus has a web site, and you can locate all their outlets there.
