Re: Dragging the shutter and color purity

Jim, et al,

I had a look at the NEF file of the old fellow at the table, and it seems (to me at least) that there are two colour shifts going on. The red/magenta shift that's common to the D2H, and can be fixed by toning down the Red chanel in the Hue/Saturation control. There definately is a yellow cast under the guys eyes and on the front of his face. I worked the NEF for a while, and couldn't get it out. I think that I may have been missing the tree for the forest. The walls are a very warm tone of yellowish white, and I think that's effecting the fill flash you're using. It would be especially apparent if you're using a bounce card or omni bounce diffuser. While I'm not a D2H owner, I have seen a lot of files from it. It seems to grab onto primary colours and really pump them up, which why you get such strong reds in the skin tones. If there was some extra yellow-ish light in the image, that would effect it.

One of the things that I'm waiting for from Nikon before I buy, is a firmware upgrade. Not only do they need to address the noise reduction, but they also need to fix the camera colour profile. Several of the colour problems I've seen with the D2H are similar to situations I've had shooting colour slide film, especially Fuji Velvia. I think when Nikon built the camera, they took one of the most popular slide films on the market, and copied the look. This would explain why guys who shoot wildlife and scenics are having such a good time with it. If Nikon could make a colour profile based on Fujicolor NPC, or something similar, and add it to the other three colour spaces that come loaded with the camera, then I think they would have it licked. The alternative, and I think what's probably going to be case, is to either build your own custom colour profile, or get someone to provide a third party profile that can be used to correct the colour problems.

Re: Dragging the shutter and color purity

I didn't have much time today but I did manage to get the NEF downloaded and I looked at it. I set the WB on the Gents hair. Compared that to the default (flash) WB. Then compared it to Sunny (5200K). The image looks about the same at Sunny as setting the Grey point. The flash setting changes the colors a lot.

I'd convert the image at Sunny myself but I don't know whether this brings the skin tones in line or not. Have you tried this setting?

Tony

Re: Dragging the shutter and color purity

David,
I was using the 80Dx flash with the snap on defuser attached. I was observing people at lunch yesterday and if you look close you can see traces of yellow in some peoples skin. (very subtle to say the least) What I am still wondering is if the camera sees into the infrared slightly and that is what gives us this amplified effect? I am wondering if anyone has tried a hot mirror filter on this to see if that is a fix? If I owned on I would give it a shot.

Of course, it could not be this at all. My .02

Re: Dragging the shutter and color purity

Tony,
Thanks for your post, no I have not tried what you asked. What I did to fix the image was lasso the areas in Photoshop and then color correct just that part of the image. This worked pretty well but it would sure be a hassle to do that to every image. What was strange about this is that a photo of a person sitting next to this guy showed no signs of yellowing at all yet he had this in every shot I took of him. My conclusion is that there is more involved than the lighting or the "proper settings" as some suggest.

Re: Dragging the shutter and color purity

I tried the hot mirror filters and see no difference. very slight difference in the black tux. Not all of the just a few...

I guess it depends on the fabric them are made of...

Re: Dragging the shutter and color purity

Jack...when you assign a custom profile to the image in PS and then convert to Adobe RGB are you then stripping that custom profile or are you just working in Adobe RGB and saving it after tweaks with your custom profile? In other words, does the workspace show a different color on the monitor than if it was viewed with the attached custom profile. Is the custom profile used as the workspace?. Also, is this custom profile the one used to print with. I admit I usually do it the hard way by just trying to match what I get from the printer to what I see on the screen regardless of profile. I have worked in a sRGB workspace and Adobe RGB. This is then tweaked to get a good print out of whatever the printer feels like that day.
