I don't know if this been answered before ( I did a search but found nothing).
I'm out on assingment shooting the Swedish WRC Rally, this is the first assignment were I used my new D2h.
All went fine this morning, but all of a sudden a got a flashing "err" on the top display and in the viewfinder. The camera didn't react when I pressed any buttons. I turned it off, took out the battery, took out the CF card and re-mounted the lens. When I turned the camera back on it still flashed the "err" at me! For a couple of minutes I thought that the camera was "dead" and that I wouldn't be able to use it any more for this weekend
I then tripped the shutter by accident... all of a sudden the "err" dissapears and the camera works like normal. This has now happend five or more times during the day. Does anyone know what the problem is?
I shot with a preset WB, manually set exposure and I used the 70-200 VR with VR on and a brand new SanDisk Ultra II 512mb card.
Could it be that the VR causes this?
Kind regards,
Karl

Karl,
Mine did this out of the box. When you would turn it on you would get the err message, press the shutter and it would go away. I used it a couple weeks or so because the cameras were in short supply. After a while it would do it during shoots. A couple of calls and the dealer replaced the camera. The new one is a different creature. No err message, lower noise at higher iso's and faster autofocus. May not want to be what you want to hear but hope it helps. Good Luck. Bob

After using my D2H for about a month I started getting the err message.
I evetually discovered that like you I could get it working by pressing the shutter release.
It got to the point that I could not clear the err, so I wound up sending it in for service.
It turned out to be a bad Shutter solenoid.

I jut got the "Err" message as well on my D2H. It started on Friday night, and after turning off, taking out the battery and replacing, taking the lens off and replacing, reformatting the card, it still would show the Err on the top of the LCD. Then I pushed the shutter and it clicked, but didn't take a picture, and then the Err went away and up came all the camera info, shutter speed, fstop, etc.
It happened again in Sat. and then Sun evening at the Wild game. Every time the only thing that would bring it back to life was to push the shutter and get it to click, then it would work just fine. I would turn it off and on once I got it working and it would remain in working condition, so it must have something to do with how long it is off between shootings for this to crop up again.
I called my dealer and will be sending it in on Mach 1st, the next time I have a two week window with no hockey to shoot, to see what Nikon can do about it.
Thanks for posting this so I could see right away what I am dealing with.

I've talked to my local Nikon service center about this phenomena. Apparently it has something to do with the shutter mechanism ( I can't remember the exact details at this moment). If you look in your manual, the last pages, there's a small table with error codes and their meanings. The interesting thing is that for the "err" code the manual say that you should return your camera to Nikon...
Since my original posting I have had the "err" syndrome a couple of times, I can't see any pattern for its appearance. Still, the camera works like one expect for 99% of the time, the last 1% is when I get the "err".
I'll send my camera to Nikon Service as soon as I get the chance to do so.
Kind regards,
Karl

This was happening to me on my D1H and D100 with my 70-200 VR. I sent the lens in and they modified it by earthing it (soldered a wire inside) and it never gave me the problem again. My thoughts are that you pop the lens back to Nikon.
Good luck,
Edmond
