Re: selling travel photos

Photoshelter works internationally. It's my on-line sales agent of choice. A lot of commercial clients already have Photoshelter merchant accounts, and they can download your full res files directly off the site.

Make the rounds of all the local travel magazines and ad agencies that work for travel companies. It's probably not as hard as you think. Get a list of e-mails from those that are interested (don't spam them to everyone), and when you post up your work, send them a notification e-mail.

Re: selling travel photos

I've sold a travel work through Alamy (Stock Photography, Royalty Free Images & Licenced Stock Photos | Alamy Images) -- travel guides, text books, magazines and newspapers have all purchased. They are strongest in Europe and will open a sales office in the US this year.

You will need to invest time in good keywording to do well on Alamy. My experience is that the price per photo for editorial is going down, unfortunately.

Re: selling travel photos

Hi Mathew
Been looking at Alamy but a bit confused by the licensing - would you recommend Royalty managed or Royalty free? It is quite hard to get your head round the differences as it's all in "contract speak" and apparently once you have opted for one you can't change.
cheers

Re: selling travel photos

ah I've just found a section that explains it much more clearly. Basically if there are people in the images you need a model release to sell RM - this is quite interesting as my pictures were taken in Vietnam where there is little or no copyright law. Many successful businesses find that other businesses set up in the same name and you can find 3, 4 or more businesses all trading under the same name - totally confuses the hell out of tourists!
