I'm planning a trip to Glacier Bay by end of August (somewhere between 25th and 31st of August).
Since I never have been there, I'm wondering if the Whales are still there to photograph. Is it worth to go (from the Wildlife-Photographing point of view) ?
Any suggestions about where to stay and which tour is really very appreciated.
Thanks very much and best wishes to all of you who read this topic...

I am pretty sure that there is no charge for joining the "Photo Travel Information Exchange" group. My wife and I have been to Glacier Bay but it has been about twelve years ago and I am sure that things have changed since. Alaska is the true "last frontier" in North America. You will love it.

I've been there, but it was on a cruise liner, and wildlife photo opportunities were non existent, (unless you wanted to try photographing in the night clubs aboard).
I'd like to go back sometime on a photo tour.

Are you going to be staying in Gustavus I assume? I would suggest you also talk to the Lodge/B&B you are staying at as they will be able to give you detailed info on the area and what they "generally" see that time of the year. They should also be able to suggest good sources for getting out to where the whales are. Ie charters or whale watching trips, etc. We do that all the time for the Guest staying at our B&B in Soldotna AK.
I have thought over it and prefer to go another time to Glacier Bay as it seems that season is "nearly" over. No more direct flights from Anchorage and so on....
Will go to Dutch Harbour and Nome instead.
When arriving at Homer and if weather is nice with me .. will try Kenai Fjords National Park ...
Thanks to you all for sharing.
Have a great time,
Claudia

Re: Glacier Bay by end of August
I am curious why you are going to Dutch Harbor. It's a long, long way down there, so there better be something good to shoot to make it worth the trip. Kenai Fjords is really nice, but it's 180 miles from Homer to Seward where the boat trips originate. I'm not sure there is any trips to Kenai Fjords from Homer. The Kenai Fjords tours leave early in the morning, so you will need to stay in Seward. I suspect you will have to fly out of Anchorage to get to Dutch Harbor and then return to Anchorage to fly to Nome, so you might go to Seward from Anchorage (126 miles).
Have a good trip
