Re: Time Lapse technique

The first I shot were RAW

I now shoot medium fine JPG for sequences. Not sure I want to go less than that, even though I will never use all of that resolution for the movie, I don't want to lose the ability to have a reasonably usable single frame out of the set, like the lightning shot. I get over a thousand of those on a 4gb CF card...

Thanks,

Mike.

Re: Time Lapse technique

Very nice indeed!

I know the file size would get to be huge, but I'd love to see this in HD, and longer sequences.

How much work goes into creating a movie like this? I'll have to try one as I have the TC80-N3 as well. I often do many, many shots of astronomical objects so as to be able to stack them. I never considered setting the camera up to do a time lapse in the daytime.

By the way the second movie doesn't come up for me. The first played fine.

Re: Time Lapse technique

I've thought about doing something like this at a wedding or a reception - just put my 20D up in a corner or behind the altar and let it rip. Would be cool for a wedding IMO - the church starts empty, fills, ceremony, empties.

How do you assemble the individual images into a 'motion' picture? (as in what software)

Re: Time Lapse technique

There are lots of ways of building the movie, but the easiest and most straightforward I've found is to use Quicktime Pro. It's relatively cheap compared to the heavy hitting motion graphics apps like Adobe After Effects, and seems to work well for this application.

Just resize and assemble all the stills in a folder and select the 'Open Image Sequence' and choose the first image in the sequence in the resulting dialog.

Name: QTMovie.jpg
Views: 44
Size: 57.7 KB

You get a prompt for what frame rate you wish to use, then the sequence opens and you can test the sequence before saving it. Once it is opened, it can be saved in a number of formats.

If you are having trouble opening the second movie I posted, it may be something to do with the Quicktime version. There was a security update for Qucktime that I loaded between making the two sequences - I'm currently on 7.3.1

Re: Time Lapse technique

Funny thing, I was able to see your second movie just fine this time. I think perhaps the server was overloaded before, as it never even tried to start.

All I can say is WOW! Love the way you can see the weather move through, and all the little lights on the ground and in the air moving around.

My problem, here in Florida, is I don't have anywhere I can set up where I can see anything on the ground. The sky would be nice, though... Thank you for the inspiration!
