Talking Georgian Bay Islands workshop

Not sure if this is allowed or not - blatant self-advertising - but here goes.

I've been asked many times to run a photography workshop and held my first 'official' workshop a few weekends ago. It was awesome!

It was called the Georgian Shores Outdoor Photography Workshop and I had two great students - well, accomplished photographers in their own right, but participants none-the-less. We had a great time and produced some wonderful images, even though it did rain most of the day and our first 'shoot' was on the side of the road while it poured down and trucks and cars whizzed by us kicking up even more preciptiation. We looked like drowned rats at the end of the day, but totally smiling. You can see a sample of the images at Georgian Shores

Anyway, I've had more requests so have now created a website dedicated to my workshops called, get this, Outdoor Photography Workshops including the Georgian Bay Islands based in Barrie, Ontario, Canada by. Cool name eh!? I can't believe it wasn't taken!

For my next excursion, I've teamed up with a colleague and friend of mine, Paul Howard, who happens to have a vessel called the 'Overexposed' (and the dingy named 'Underexposed') and together we're holding a workshop in the waters of the Georgian Bay Islands. Specifically, Brebeuf Island Lighthouse and the Gin Rocks - two of the most picturesque area of Georgian Bay. The date is set for September 12, 2007, leaving Penetanguishene at 1:00pm and returning after sunset.

Paul is an experienced boater that knows the waters well and is also a professional photographer, and I will be leading the workshop (since I don't know anything about boating). This is the prime influence and subject matter for painter Tom Thomson and the famed "Group of Seven". I'm not new to Georgian Bay either, having studied under Budd Watson, friend and mentor, for many years and photographed the wonderous land and seascapes of Georgian Bay. A day on Georgian Bay is worth a month in the studio - believe me!

So, I think most members here are advanced enough that my 'tutoring' may be of questionable value, but it is a great opportunity to photograph the beauty of Georgian Bay (it's been said that Georgian Bay has the best sunsets in the world - hopefully we'll catch one) and maybe I can help in some way to at least further enhance the passion we call photography.

If you want more info.. just let me know.

Re: Georgian Bay Islands workshop

Mike, if you were a little closer I'd come.

Every time I hear of a workshop within reasonable distance (in and around Australia) they seem to have over the top pricetags. The last one I got excited about ran to $1000 per day... (I'm sure there are good reasons for this, but it doesn't make it any easier to go...)

BTW, from your website, I am offered to subscribe to your blog's RRS feed. Were you thinking of getting some more tripod gear while you wrote that?

Mike.

Re: Georgian Bay Islands workshop

Well... if things go VERY well, maybe one day I'll have a workshop in Australia! I'll need a guide of course .

re: tripods... I've been waiting for my Gitzo 3540XLS for almost 7 weeks now. I think it's coming from France by canoe.

Re: Georgian Bay Islands workshop

Nice tripod, hope it gets to you soon. Makes my carry/hike around (old gitzo 1125/Markins Q3) look positively puny.

here's what I was talking about with my RRS quip:

I think the acronym is RSS unless they have renamed it while I wasn't watching. (possible)

Re: Georgian Bay Islands workshop

Got my 3540XLS and LOVE it!! Fast to set up, weights nothing (compared to my old Manfrotto 058) and looks great with my BH-55 attached. Couldn't be happier.
