Bob, I guess thar depends on what you photograph. I do wildlife and would never go for any thing less than an 80 to 200 and it must be a 2.8, all my lenes are 2.8 except my 800mm that is 5.6.I want the 2/8 as I can add a 2X and still have A/F. If I can't set up with my 800 close to the truck and am going to have to walk a ways than I take my 120 to 300 Sigma 2.8 and a 2X with a light tripod of monopod. Backpack can have a smaller lens, spare batteries, memory and some lunch. I guess if your going to the park to shoot flowers or a close subject of any kind you can get what you want with a smaller, slower, lighter lens. Getting close to eagles is not only hard it is also against the law so alas, the big lens.
