| Re: Canon 100-400L IS w/ 1.4x TC -- How sharp? Starting with a soft lens and adding the Canon 1.4x extender won't make images sharper. The 100-400 is a nice lens for the price, but it is not the sharpest available from Canon. I just can't afford the others.
I own the 100-400IS lens and have been using it for about 1-1/2 years on my Canon EOS 1VHS and for the last few weeks on my new Canon 10D.
The 1.4x/100-400IS combo only auto focuses on the center focusing spot on my 1VHS. On the 10D, auto focus doesn't work so I have to manual focus. Fortunately, on the 10D with a 1.6X magnification factor, I don't have to use the 1.4x extender to get the same results as I would on the 1VHS.
I think that the 1.4x/100-400 combo is noticably softer than the 100-400 by itself, even when using a solid tripod.
Just MHO.
