Travel to east Canada and nord east US

Hi all,

I will travel this September and October to Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Maine, etc. and I'm wondering if someone can give me a special tip.
I want to go for shooting (with my camera of course !) the Indian Summer and especially the big Moose and Beavers.
Does someone have good places for both ?
Many thanks for all your help.
Best wishes from Switzerland to all of you.
Regards,
Claudia

End of Septemeber and beginning of October will be peak fall foliage time for that part of the country. For instance, peak time for central and southern Vermont is the first week of October. You can get a lot of nice shots of white churches and red barns against some beautful trees turning yellow and red.

There a number of photoguides that you can buy that will give you some ideas where to go. PhotoSecrets lists quite a few that you can order on-line.

The area around Baxter State Park in Maine, I understand is a very good area for moose, there is a good description here http://www.wildlifewatcher.com/ne/katahdin.phtml

Re: Travel to east Canada and nord east US

Claudia...

I've never actually been to the Chapleau Crown Game Preserve bu I can imagine it's a wonderful place for wildlife as I am from a city relatively close to that part of Ontario. A word of warning. Ontario is a very large province... driving from the eastern border to the western border will easily take 30 hours of continuous driving. The Chapleau are is in Northern Ontario probably about 8-9 hours drive from Ottawa, the capital of Canada. Ottawa is at least 10 hours drive from New Brunswick - depending on where you are. I'm not sure what sort of schedule that you have for your travels.... but the distances that cover the areas you mention are very broad so you might want to try and keep your travels to a smaller area... unless youve got an unlimited budget and are flying everywhere of course! I might recommend the Ottawa area as a home base for a trip to Ontario and Quebec. Late September early October is a wonderful time of year (no mosquitoes or blackflies) and there is a lot of wonderful scenery a relativley short drive from Ottawa. Algonquin Provincial Park in Central Ontario is 2-3 hours from the city and will have lots of lodges in the wilderness to stay at. Heading North and East from Ottawa into Quebec you will find lots to see and South and East willput you into upper New York State and the Adirondacks. If you really want to get to Maine it's about 8-10 hours of solid driving.... but well worth it... Camden is a wonderful place to stay.

I hope this little ramble is of some help to you.

The Chapleau game preserve is very large and fairly remote with road access that skirts the outside but not the interior. To fully appreciate the area you will need a canoe, backpacking equipment, and for someone not familiar with the North an experienced guide, but it is beautiful.
