Photo-ops in Austin, TX and surrounding?

I'll be in Austin, TX this coming weekend with free time before a set of business meetings next week.

Suggestions for not-the-usual landscapes and cityscapes??? I'll have some gear with me, a trekker backpack, and a car.

There is one must see/do photo op in Austin: the bats at the Congress Street bridge. This time of year there are 2 MILLION bats living under the bridge and they come out every evening at dusk. Take you camera/tripod/video camera/hat (the bats poop as they fly out). Get there early for a good seat.

For some other nature oops, try Hornsby Bend. Do an internet search and you'll come up with some info.

DON'T MISS THE BATS!

Jim

Hmmm, the big attraction is the guan-o-matic bridge bats, remind me to pack extra shampoo.

There are other interesting photo-ops, too, besides the bomb-lobbing bats

Around UT campus, there are a bunch of different statues, etc, some interesting architecture, as well, like the UT tower, etc. The capital, and surrounding areas have some interesting stuff, too - various memorials, etc. The 360 bridge is a popular shot. Barton Springs Pool makes for some "interesting" shots, and a nice spot to take a cool dip.

Don't forget a sunset from the decks of the Oasis out on lake Travis (aka, the sunset capital of Texas

A short drive gets you to other things, such as Enchanted Rock (just north of Fredricksburg). Various small towns have interesting architecture, etc. And, there's usually some kind of festival going on around here on the weekends....

HTH...

Dave (who's looking for photo-ops 'round Austin, himself)

If you've never been to Enchanted Rock it's an hour or two from Austin and stinking BEAUTIFUL. It's an 800ft tall lava dome that hardened into granite several thousand years ago. Since then the surrounding sedementary rock has worn away leaving this massive chunk of granite out in the middle of nowhere.

Very beautiful and if there's been any recent rains (the past week here in Dallas has been very wet) the place should be plenty green.
