Monument Valley

Anyone have any tips for information about the area for taking pics? Planning on going through the area the first week of September and spending up to 3 days there. Looking to get in some sunrise/sunset photo time. So anyone have any good or bad spots, do's and don'ts, etc??

tx,
Martin

Re: Monument Valley

My wife and I went two years ago. It's quite beautiful and very dusty, so be careful with your camera and lenses.

We went on a bus tour, so we had a lot of high sun. I believe a lot of the land is owned by Navajos, so be aware of any regulations or customs.

There are a lot of books and photoguides about the area, so do some research. Go to
this photoguide website to find some guides.

Re: Monument Valley

Goulding's Trading Post, (801-727-3231), is a very nice motel directly across the street from Monument Valley. "Across the street" sounds odd to those of us from the east coast, but once you see this part of the country you'll know what I mean.

The access road to Monument Valley is about five miles long, but long before you turn in to the access road you'll be looking at the giant sandstone pillars. Goulding's is directly across the street from the access road, and the rooms on the east side look directly at the Monument. It's very convenient for late evening and pre-dawn access!

Good luck.

Re: Monument Valley

I would get myself a guide. I've been to Monument Valley without one and it is VERY difficult to get sunrise and sunset pictures without hiring a guide. It is Native American land and people live there. There are a number of good guides, but I have heard excellent words when using this person.

Kéyah Hózhóní He is a photographer himself and if you want to see what he has to offer or contact him I would go to www.monumentvalley.com

Have a good time is a wonderful place that truly doesn't hit you until after you leave.
