Hi Ethan,
There are numerous ways to approach macro photography depending on just how close you need to get and the degree of magnification necessary. From standard macro lenses to extension tubes, bellows and reversed lenses, there are numerous approaches which can be used to get some incredible shots. You might want to go to the nature photographers online magazine and hang out on the macro forum for tips, etc. Also you might want to try Phil Askey's forum and check out photos by Charles Chien who has carried the reversed lens, extension tube, bellows to the nth degree. Here's a link to one of Charles' shots which I saved from a while back - this will give you an idea for the possible.... By the way, this is a tinly little golden ant...

I have a D60 and a 1Ds, I use the D60 for macro shots. There's a lot of debate on what the best lighting is, personally I use the 500EX and just blast them! Here are some thoughts on doing macro photography of insects, including the lighting issues, let me know what you think of it:
I use a Canon 100mm f2.8 USM Macro, and think it's brilliant - very sharp even wide open (easily surpasses my 200mm f2.8L USM II). I've just recently bought a Canon MT-24EX and haven't really formed an opinion on that yet...
I used to use the FD Macro range, and owned the 50mm and 200mm - neither of which were quite right for my interest in plants - the 100mm is ideal though

I use a D60 with an MP-E 65mm macro and a MT-24EX twin flash. I also have a 180mm L macro. I use a 550EX with it, but I need to get some brackets yet. I don't use it as much as the MP-E.

Guys, please tell me some more about the MT-24EX. Is it convenient? Is it easy to cart around and set up? In what situations is it better than a simple ring-lite? How close can you get to your subject before the lens causes a shadow from a regular (i.e. 540 or 440 ex) hotshoe mounted flash?
thanks,
jp
