This is a little late of a reply but Art Wolfe mentioned in a master class that when he goes out to shoot, he only takes what he needs. He also said that one has to limit what one is expecting to shoot because there is just too much to carry. He also has a very able assistant who helped him with the slide show presentation portion of the class.

I carry my 500mm L IS in my Lowpro backpack. However, a Sherpa is always a good option....

I think the real secret is to carry less. Go with a carbon fiber tripod, leave the extras behind and carry teleconverters instead of extra lenses. The more you shoot, the more you realize what you really need and what never gets used. Or get an assistant/intern/crew.

Which backpack do you use? Can you carry your 500 with body attached?
